My son has had this warning on his work email:

Please be aware that through the SOR system we have been alerted that a number of Jacobs staff as well as client staff have been targeted by pickpockets around Birmingham New Street train station and other locations in the vicinity. The incidents have a common theme with the thief barging/shoulder checking into the victim and walking off having stolen an item.
If you are planning a trip to Birmingham please do consider the attached advice from Global Security. The principal[sic] of situational awareness is equally applicable at other locations and train stations but this is a trending situation to be aware of.
