I think a few benefit fraud officials should be let loose in the said area.

Either answer opens a can of worms easier than a Tesco wagon.

On a different note, how does this affect the £4,800 profit per minute Tesco allegedly makes?

On a more serious note, the Dagenham to Halewood car trains in the 1970s were always being targeted

On a few occasions, the Police set a trap by having the train stop specially and then hidden Officers would chase the thieves, and usually caught a fair number.

And when they had to come via Allerton/Garston/Speke to be turned right way round on the triangle. The radios', spare wheels and even the spare keys were targets for theives. We had two electrocutions and at least 3 people run over.

As for the Glasgow Bronx, You didn't narrow it down well enough but I do remember the WCML going through many bad areas. Wonder if the train was at the Newton South junction signal, I'd always get held up there on Intercity trains.

Not at all, it's never been uncommon for a 40 footer to disappear into thin air and be recovered empty.

Rail freight would seem to be (in general) more secure - there are security fences round most lines, it's moving at a faster speed and less likely to stop in traffic. Although as above, where there's a will...

It could easily happen just the same when using roads, I've heard of people parking their car and caravan in a service station and going to the toilet, they go back to their car and there is no trace of the caravan.

That's doing other road users a public service IMO

I don't condone theft of any kind, although I'd say railfreight is slightly more secure than road freight. In places like Russia it's an everyday thing for EU-based truckers to be held at gunpoint while the local gang sifts through the manifest for anything that may be of use to them.

Lorry drivers often leave their trailer doors open when parked up on purpose if they do not have a load onboard as potential thieves are able to take a peek inside without slashing the curtains.
