Considering the 345s are riding on brand new track, that's rather worrying. Makes a little more sense now as to why I've heard them described as glorified tube stock.
The ride quality is the same on all Aventras I've been on.

The fact that the 345s are smooth as silk in the central section and ride poorly (as with the 720s) on the eastern section is more down to track condition.

Not sure they're "the worst train", but the most disappointing new train is for me the 800-series units. The ride is very firm, as if there isn't enough 'give' in the suspension. It reminds me of being on a 158 years ago that developed some sort of fault that caused the airbags in the suspension to deflate. I've always thought the ride quality of mk4s wasn't great, but compared to the 80x it's like floating on a cloud.
Less importantly, but still a bit annoying, is (from an enthusiast perspective) the uniformity of the fleets because so many operators are using basically the same trains with just different coloured vinyl on the outside and different cloth on the inside. Obviously there's advantages to that uniformity (or would be if the railway was operated as a single entity) but it does make things a little bit dull.

The Stadler units are far superior, but obviously cost a fair bit more.

It's not that I don't like Class 323s, but I was very frightened by the noises they made as a young child and still don't like the noises now, though, admittedly, I haven't seen one for an age.
I'll also add Class 717s to the list on here - not quite as bad as the 700s but still with poor seating and a horribly bland front end.

I would have to go for any 22x.

Narrow trains due to the tilt profile meaning limited overhead storage and a cramped feel, smelly toilets, inadequate luggage space, loud vibrating underfloor engines. To think that these were a successor to MK3 coaches makes me sad every time I use them.

They are also in a petty poor condition now with the 222s standar class being especially poor for an Intercity service to London. Whilst they are also often inadequate for the services operated with people standing for long periods .

A decent refurb and some new stock would solve the last two points but even with this I will never love the 22x trains and would not mourn their passing to Booths.
Let's also take into account that the 7 car sets have too much 1st class provisioning to relieve the overcrowding that often happened on a 5 car set, some of the seats are starting to fall apart, the fold down tables can be a bit grotty sometimes, some of the windows are blown (as in there's condensation between the panes of glass), there's no USB plug sockets (and only 1 standard plug socket per pair of seats), the lights can be a whole mismatch of color temperatures (and need upgrading to LED) and the worst part: you can't pick up FM/DAB/3G/4G/5G/GPS through the metallized carriage windows very well, if at all, which results in the on board Wi-Fi getting extremely overloaded extremely quickly (as in, it barely loads any webpages at all, and cannot load Discord/WhatsApp).

IMO, the entire 22x fleet is long overdue a one way ticket to Newport Sims Metals. Calling at Newport Sims Metals only.

Worst train today I'd say has to be 313 or 387. Shoddy ride quality for the 387 and for the 313s just the sheer unreliability on them

I would say the TPE loco hauled sets take some beating if you are using the metric of "What they could have been, versus what they ended up being"

Unreliable, terrible window alignment, deafening if you are in the station with one and you should see the state of the platform canopy at York platform 2 where the 68 berths up.

Nowhere near as good as the 802s on the same York-Leeds run.

I have no problems with the 195s. (Except when a 2 car one turns up) and the not the best ride quality, but what they replaced on the routes i use, its nice for something to be able to get up the hill.

If there is one train I would avoid like the plague these days it would be a Northern 150 though. Thankfully incredibly rare in my patch, but apart from the fact they are a train, there are no positives when one turns up at the station.

To be honest, I'd much rather have a pair of 68s (one at each end) and a set of suitable coaches on the MML compared to the woeful 22x and the unloved, unrefurbished 360s.

The 222's were only designed to work in tandem with another substantial fleet on the MML.

In terms of the worst train, my opinion has changed and it’s now got to be the class 150, some are becoming increasingly tatty.

I'd probably agree with them being classed as the "worst" trains on the network, though the handful of remaining PEP-derived classes share many of their flaws (primarily a lack of a decent view from almost every seat). A few other posters have remarked that the PEP design has aged better than the 20m mk3, but I don't share this opinion. Both types to me look exactly like they were designed in the decade they actually were designed in.

However being the only 40m DMUs in the country, they may continue to have a niche use-case long after their 15x brethren have been sold on to Wilkinson Sword (or Alcan in the case of 158s).

Like when we had both HSTs/43s and Meridians/222s, and I would always try and get an HST wherever possible.

Really think the HSTs & Mk3s should have been refurbished to PRM standards, with the 22x's (that includes XC's 220s/221s and Avanti's 221s) ALL being sent one way to Sims.

Even though some on here have stated the 80x's aren't very good as an intercity train, they should at least be better than the 22x's. Roll on the 810s, that way someone else can deal with the 222s!

You'd probably be saying the opposite if the HSTs had stayed. They'd probably end up like the I7C fleet ScotRail has.

At least you can still (in all likelihood) pick up a decent mobile phone, GPS, or radio signal through a modified HST set.
The Class 22x (that's Voyagers, Super Voyagers and Meridians) all have metallized glass that blocks all kinds of RF signals, so you can't listen to the radio and you can't use 3G/4G to stream anything as the windows block the signal out. Therefore, the onboard Wi-Fi gets ridiculously overloaded to the point where you can't even load WhatsApp or Discord messages. That alone makes the 22x unsuitable for pretty much any length of journey.

Not to mention that 220s and 221s are used on very long distance CrossCountry services (and should be doubled up, due to capacity reasons) and the 222s are starting to look very run down.

All we need is CrossCountry to get some bi-modes for their long distance fleet (as well as Avanti, to replace their 221s) and the entire Voyager based fleet can go straight to Newport Sims Metals.

In my personal opinion, the worst 'modern' unit has to be the 170 Turbostar. Sure, the 153s are cramped and tired although they're from the late 80s. The 170s just seem to have aged particularly poorly imo and are often used on plenty of services that they aren't well suited for. The worst of the lot have to be the West Midlands Railway (or ex with EMR) examples. I find the turbostar engine noise especially grating. The 172s are a vast improvement although I still wouldn't go as far to say I like them.

The other member of the Bombardier 'star' family that I think are particularly poor are the 376s, which have to have some of the most uncomfortable seats on any rail vehicle in the country. The lack of toilets is also rather ridiculous, as despite them being 'metro' units, certain routes definitely require one. The interior as a whole is just particularly unwelcoming.

The 175/180 simply on reliability and ride quality grounds, both are just extremely poor. Great seats, but poor everything else.

170s are excellent units and definitely aged well apart from EMR which haven't even refurbished them yet. 376s are mostly good units for the metro operations. Really what let's them down is the lack of AC.

Defo agree on the 175/180s

Some aspects of 170s feel a bit cheap, I will give you. But I don't agree re the WM units, the green interiors look bright and airy, and unlike XC's they appear to get basic maintenance inside. As to unsuitable routes, I would say Northern do, but I fail to see anything unsuitable about e.g. the Herefords or the XC regional express routes other than the formations on the latter being a bit short.

It never takes long to get around to this so I’ll debunk the myth yet again.

Less than half of the Northern units work Harrogate line services per day (6 in total). The remainder work Sheffield - Scarborough services which is the type of service they were built for. This combination means the units aren’t suffering like people like to think they are.

They do work stopping services for other company’s too (Scotrail, EMR) but this is quite happily ignored.

Because Northern? I don’t know, it’s what it usually comes down to.

I think this is a problem with EMR using 170s as a one-size-fits-all solution - some of the routes (eg Ivanhoe Line) aren’t suitable for regional express trains; but, short of ordering new trains (which the DfT would never allow!), not sure that there was anything else suitable & available to meet the brief. The number and type of Regional routes is too varied for one type of cascaded train (that was available at the time) to be appropriate for everything.

Is there an eventual solution for the Harrogate Line, or will it be 170s for the foreseeable future?
I’d say EMR’s 158s - not as a serious alternative, more just to wind up grumpy Northern users and provoke them to say “hands off our beautiful 170s - we don’t want EMR’s old junk”

195s would be absolutely perfect. Question is, are any others used on the east side?

There was that crazy plan to use Viva Rail ex-LUL stock on the route every 15min to Harrogate then every other to York. Can’t remember if 3rd rail came into this or just diesel.

195s. That is, would 195s for 'Arrigut result in a microfleet and thus not feasible, or are there already any over that side?
There are quite a few 195s in the area - e.g. operating Leeds - York, Leeds - Manchester Victoria - so a microfleet would not be formed I think.

No third-rail entertained so far north; it's hard enough getting even the slightest of fill-in schemes considered in ex-Southern territory. Batteries were suggested with recharging at turn-round points, but this never really gained any traction. (Source, anonymized Northern franchise bid, in author's head)
