You could hear her for miles away, that fantastic distinctive throbbing sound that the 071's produce. The 0835 Limerick - Heuston formed of the 22000 DMU's passed me before 073 appeared which suprised me as 073 should have been in front but was nearly 30 mins late.

It came down the bank at full bore but the driver notched off just after passing the overbridge in the distance.

Not a bad morning, off to Limerick tonight to capture the start of the new Nenagh - Limerick Commuter services http://www.irishrail.ie/news_centre/news.asp?action=view&news_id=432

This involves the spiltting of DMU's each morning at Nenagh, a first for Irish Rail in modern times and some unusual and interesting signalling arrangements to get around the fact Nenagh is on a single track section and in the middle of the long block section between Birdhill and Roscrea and you will have two trains in the one section, but going in opposite directions at the same time.

The new service, was developed in a unique initiative between Iarnród Éireann and Ireland's first Community Rail Partnership, "The Nenagh Rail Partnership". The new services will enable commuters living in Nenagh, Birdhill and Castleconnell, and working in Limerick City, to switch to the rail for the first time.

Hi folks,

From Friday evening 5th to Sunday morning 7th September there was a major engineering blockade between Thurles and Charleville with the renewal of the Multeen Bridge, near Limerick Junction and track renewal in Limerick Junction Station. For this blockade a special timetable was introduced for the Saturday and Sunday morning with many service altered and cancelled. One benefit of the blockade was an enhanced service between Limerick and Ballybrophy via Nenagh, the staple diet of two trains a day was increased to five. As a result, DMU's would be crossing in Roscrea, once in the morning and the second crossing in the afternoon. This is possibly the first time that modern DMU's have crossed in Roscrea? So to get this rare event I travelled down to Roscrea this morning to get the first crossing. Also uploaded is a picture from Borris-in-Ossory and a couple of pictures between Portarlington and Portlaoise.

Evening all,

Photos from this week so far include:

Thursday evening in Portarlington saw 074 hauling MK4 set 4001 and a failed 215 back to Dublin from Limerick Junction and 207 on the 1650 Heuston - Galway.

On Friday a set of MKIII's were scheduled to be transferred from Inchicore to Dundalk for storage. The train operated via Pearse station for loco 177 to run-around. Sadly due to operational problems the train was returned to Inchicore instead of going to Dundalk. Pictures of the train at Connolly and Tara Street now on the site. Thanks to Josefstadt for the pictures.

On Saturday the 0700 Westport - Heuston was delayed in Westport before departure so 2608 + 2607 which were due to be transferred from Ballina to Drogheda were used in passenger service from Ballina through to Heuston in the path of the 0700 Westport - Heuston from Manulla Junction. Has to be one of the DMU workings of the year! Also seen in Portarlington on Saturday was Enterprise loco 233 working the 1050 Galway - Heuston.

Thanks for the comment Craig. Never been to Ballyhale by road before so finding it was a bit of guesswork. Can you believe there used to be a station at this location and it's just over a mile to the village down a farmer's laneway!

Tuesday saw 22032 entering service with the 0630 Portlaoise - Heuston, while the final loco hauled 1625 Heuston - Waterford was worked by loco 201 + 7 MK III (7411). For good measure 203 was also captured this evening at Portarlington in charge of the 1750 Heuston - Galway, 6 MK III (7405).
