By god that took some reading Kite. Very good reading but I think its definitely time for you to be confined to Barracks;) so we can all keep up, I still think, it'd be easier if network rail built a station outside your house, you spend so much time with the various TOCs. Walk away for a few days and you've trip reports akin to War and Peace. When you've finished the shacks down there, I'll have a word with a few estate agents up here for you to relocate. A top effort kite.
Many congratulations on clearing so many shacks and getting a fair few winners underlined too. I lost count of what you've cleared haulage wise but by god your blazing one helluva trail through stuff.

I've already got a station pretty much outside my house (5 minute walk) ;)

the sun had come out as I sat to watch the world go by before 156470 returned from Matlock to take me back to Ambergate.

A quite basic shack, although there appears to be the remains of platform carrying on towards Matlock,

You may be interested to learn that Ambergate once boasted six platforms as part of a triangular station.

nearest station to the Tram museum at Crick, but as the signs warned it was a steep uphill walk. A canal ran alongside the railway at this point, so I took some time to relax

I apologize for being pedantic but you might be interested to know that the village is actually Crich as opposed to Crick. It is indeed a stiff walk.

formed of winner 153321 and dud 153310 to take me to Peartree.

A couple other passengers alighted, and after being allowed out of the station by the controller of the gate (a station where I advise it’s best to arrive by train rather than by foot, just in case you have issues gaining access to the platforms), and it’s opposite a retail/leisure park with housing, seems very strange why it only gets 2 services a day, give it an hourly service and it would probably capture more passengers, it’s not like the station is in the middle of nowhere. Anyhow, Google Maps fired up and it was a short walk to a bus stop, with a “Sapphire 38” double decker, fleet 4405 took me back towards the city centre, and a short walk back to Derby.

There are very good reasons for that! The retail park essentially consists of a Sainsbury's and a B&Q; with the best will in the world very few people in Derby would ever consider taking the train to Peartree even if the service was every 15 minutes in order to buy groceries or paint / tiles / wall paper from B & Q.

In terms of the cinema / bowling alley (which is essentially what the "leisure park" is) it would be much quicker to either drive to the cinema or take the bus even if the service was more frequent. Especially given that the retail park is located on the outer ring road.

Not only that but the residents living close to the station mostly don't have the means to travel beyond Derby, not having two pennies to rub together. In which case taking the bus into the city centre is much more flexible.

Fair enough, with Peartree, just seemed strange that it had a rubbish service.

I shall update my reports for the right name for the tram place. 6 platforms at Ambergate, quite a large downgrade to its current single platform.

I think this is the end of Kite's mobile "hip-hop" machine (also known as my ancient iPod Classic from 2007), seems to be stuck on the apple boot loop :(

6th May – An evening in London

Due to being on a rail-tour on the Saturday which started from St Pancras at 7:30 I decided to stay overnight in London, where it is possible to get to St Pancras for that time from the first train from Grateley, I didn’t want to risk it in case the service was late. My hotel changed once I heard that Techni had booked onto the same tour and we decided to split the cost of a twin room at the Easy Hotel in Croydon.

The 14:38 from Andover towards Waterloo this afternoon was formed of 158888, 159006 & 159105, sadly no 158884 for Techni to finally get in the bag, and it was a good run, although with crossing over from the up fast to the up slow track just before Brookwood station to allow a seriously late running 444 to overtake, although it did mean a couple minute delay in departing Woking, made worst by a go-slow crawl around the Surbiton area, arriving into Clapham Junction around 10 minutes late. Anyhow meeting up with Tecnhi & Hassaan and we crossed over to platform 13 to jump on the first Southern service towards East Croydon so that we could check in, and more importantly get rid of some weight.

First service was formed of duds 377137/377122 heading towards Eastbourne & Littlehampton (I believe) and it was rather busy, until East Croydon were we bailed, checking into base camp and dumping some weight from the bags. After a quick break we returned to East Croydon and jumped onto duds 171721 & 171802 for the run into London Bridge, where it was a short crossing over to platform 3 to jump onto a pair of slightly warm 376s for the run into London Cannon Street, with 376012 & 376005 the pair of evil-stars in question. When we rolled into Cannon Street, Techni noticed a pair of required 375/9s on front of a trio, and with nothing else to do (as we were hoping to stay close to be able to grab a trio of 387s heading northbound featuring my last Thameslink unit.

Just as we were heading over to platform 1, a trio of networkers rolled in, and the unit at the back stuck out, as it was one of my last 3 standard class only 465s, so I turned down the chance to grab 914 and walked up the platform for the evening peak’s only trio 465 working, with dud 465170 leading winners 465246 & 465047, I wasn’t complaining as I boarded, overhearing that due to a cancellation of a Sevenoaks service the trio of 375s on platform 1 would be calling additionally at Orpington, however Techni & Hassaan were blocked inside unable to escape at London Bridge, as I jumped on for a standing room only dud 375924, 375908 & winner 375914 for the speedy run down to Orpington, knowing that 387121 would have to wait for another day.

After a PNB, a pair of dud 465/9s rolled in which we turned down in exchange for waiting an extra 5 minutes for a pair of units from Hastings, duds 375605 & 375915 rolled in and we jumped onto the 375/6 as Techni hasn’t seen the inside of a refurbished unit, but sadly the AC wasn’t working so it got quite warm as we had a slow crawl up towards Charing Cross, caught behind some late running services (but at least both Techni & Hassaan scored the new track alignment between Bridge & Waterloo East. We were getting hungry and were due to meet Kris at a Wetherspoons in Farringdon, so it was a short walk to Embankment, and I scored 21301/21302 on a nano leap to Temple, before D-stock 7516/7042 to Blackfriars.

First northbound service was formed of duds 377504 & 377502 which we took down the hill to City Thameslink, before getting some 319-thrash in the shape of 319444 & 319421 to Farringdon. Heading out to Wetherspoons, and it was nice to put a picture to Kris and we had a good chat and meal. Earlier in the day Techni spotted my last 455 floating around, which gave me a chance to do some tracking, and suggested it was making its way back up from Dorking towards Victoria, with a hope to grabbing it at Balham. However it wasn’t to be as duds 377208/377515 took us back to Blackfriars, parting ways with Hassaan who headed east, and we headed west on dud 7046 & winner7502 to Victoria, sadly the plan didn’t hold as we had option 2 to link up at Clapham Junction.

First departure was formed of dud 377106 & 377149 which was taken to Clapham Junction, crossing over to the slow up platform to await for hopefully a pair of 455s, and in rolled 455807 which was a good sign as winner (and last 455) 455842 was on the rear, happy days another class cleared as we took them to Battersea Park. Next service back to Clapham was in the hands of duds 377703 & 377615 as we through about calling it a night as we headed up the stairs to prepare to jump on a 442, however as we walked up I noticed the carriage number of a 377 which had just rolled in on P14 featured “17” at the end, so we just jumped on as I knew I needed all the 17s, and was in luck as it was winner 377117 leading dud 377320 and winner 377302 at the rear, 2 winning 377s for the price of 1, and only 6 more to go (2x1s, 2x3s, 2x4s) so I was happy, even happier when we rolled into the “main-line” side of Victoria, giving more options.

Techni had spotted a required 377/3 on the 3rd departure towards East Croydon, with a pair of 442s on the first departure and a pair of dud 377s on the 2nd, so we did the long walk up the platform collecting numbers for duds 377326, 377316, 377303 & 377306, Techni happy he got 2 more winners from that quad set, and eventually we got going after an incident, back to East Croydon, where we exited the station for a quick break and supply raid at Sainsburys. A bit of red pen fever came over us as winning tram 2548 rolled in so it was a quick leap to Leananon Road, followed by turning down a winner in exchange for 2556 back to East Croydon as that one was down as heading to Therapia Lane (and was a good chance of going straight to depot afterwards). Dud 2562 was taken back to Lebanon Road, and Techni jumped on a dud tram for me, as I waited for winner 2550, with Techni rejoining at East Croydon for a hop to George Street.

Winner 2563 was next which we took around the loop to Wellesley Road, followed by dud 2539 back to East Croydon, where we called it a night, although 4 more trams in the book, I was happy with the score. Thankfully we got the AC working in the sealed room, which was nice and cool, with alarm set for silly-o-clock tomorrow morning to catch a Thameslink service north to St Pancras.

-----------------------

7th May – The Midland & Great Central HST tour

Alarm was set and we got up and headed to East Croydon station, via Upper Crust for a cold sausage baguette (not the nicest thing especially since I through it would have been warmed up), it was down to platform 1 for a short wait before duds 387113 & 387111 rolled in to take us the usual Thameslink crawl around South London, reaching St Pancras on time, as we exited the station for a quick break & supply grab from Boots for sandwiches for later in the day (as we were due to be on the HST from 7:30 to around 14:00).

I was in coach C, and Techni was in coach E (as we booked at different times), required 43059 was leading dud 43050 and the set was a bit filthy following the set which was cleaned up ready for the tour failing overnight, anyhow taking up my seat with the horrible fixed low armrests, the only good thing about these IC70 seats is that they are low enough to see over the top of. Anyhow, we departed on time and headed north, picking up at Luton Airport, Bedford & finally Market Harborough where the train got pretty much full, and we turned off the main line for my first new coverage of the day with the freight only line via Coalville towards Burton-on-Trent.

It was interesting to look out the window at this freight line, to see the various sidings in varying states of decay, where old stations used to be, but as with most freight routes the speed was slow, but we were still early near the end and sat around the junction with the main Derby – Tamworth line for a good 10 minutes before being allowed out, to speed up through Burton and Willington, pausing for a 170 before turning right down the freight line via Castle Donnington, turning left to go via Toton and onwards getting some speed, before turning right crossing country to the Robin Hood line, a similar route taken last August.

Up the Robin Hood line, speeding via the likes of Shirebrook, turning left over the curve via Shireoaks, before we slowed to take the right to go onto the South Yorkshire Joint Line, a line done last year southwards, but this time northwards, and I decided to go and visit Techni for a chat (as the South Yorkshire Joint Line is very slow and quite boring, parts of it are in cuttings, or in heavy trees so it’s not like I could look out of the window at the scenery. We had a nice chat about various stuff, comparing notes as it was.

Eventually we reached the end, scoring a bit of new track as we carried on to Kirk Sandall junction and onto the main line towards Scunthorpe, going into the goods line passed Hatfield & Stainforth for a few units to pass, before following what appeared to be a required 185 eastwards, through Scunthorpe (is it just me who thinks the bay platform would be better at the other end of the station, so that the Northern terminators can terminate and not have to clear the line?), pausing at Barnetby and at Grimsby Town before carrying onto the single track section to Cleethorpes, after another move forward as the driver stopped short of the buffets (at the usual place where trains stop), and we were released.

We met up with HMS Ark Royal down for the day from Hull, however as himself & Techni wanted to visit a pub for some adult beverages, we parted ways as I picked up a day return to Grimsby Town, scoring 185135 for the short run, crossing over the footbridge to catch a late running winning dogbox in the shape of 153330 working the Barton line services, so it was back to Cleethorpes, and with a required 142 hanging around waiting to form the next Sheffield via Brigg service, it gave me something to come back to (as those 142s will be hard to track down as they work in many places in the Northern network). I went via Sainsburys (via Wetherspoons, but not knowing it had multiple floors) before texting back to find out that Techni & Ark Royal were on the top roof “garden”, so I went by to say hi and have a chat (and listening to Ark Royal’s last Northern train adventure).

I said farewell as they headed to Sainsburys to do the time honoured tradition of picking out new brews, and I got 142091 into the bag for the run to Grimsby Town, before a fester as the next inbound TPE was running around 18 minutes late at this point, nothing much to do around the station so it was a time to relax and wait. The automatic station announcer said that the train was in the platform a good minute or two before it eventually rolled up and I through “that doesn’t look like a 185” and in rolled winner 170308 with dud 170303 on the rear. I wasn’t expecting to clear my remaining 170/3 today, as I smiled for the short run back to Cleethorpes, via the toilet before reboarding the HST (43050/43059), with the windows semi-cleaned.

Unlike the way up I stood by the droplight, waved goodbye to Ark Royal (very nice meeting you), and settled down for a good run back towards Lincoln, for a brief stop for a crew change however as we were booked to stay in Lincoln for a while we were allowed out early behind an all station stopper towards Leicester, so it wasn’t as fast, stopping for 10 minutes at a manual level crossing for it to be opened up. Into Nottingham for another crew change and the doors were released for passengers to alight if they so wished. A delay in departing (something to do with the new driver getting delayed on route to Nottingham), but we zoomed out, going into the slow lines after East Midlands Parkway, other than to overtake a Network Rail train with top & tailed 73s.

Going via Leicester goods loop scored a micro-grice, but we were on time dropping off at Market Harborough, Bedford & Luton, but then it turned into a right old crawl as we were booked to arrive 45 minutes later into St Pancras (a journey which takes around 19 minutes on a 222) so it was slow line running before swapping over to the fast lines around Hendon (only for another service to “loop” us), before arriving into St Pancras pretty much bang on time. A quick walk down to the Thameslink platforms saw a dud 319 in the station which we allowed to depart before duds 387201 & 387120 rolled in, although nice to get more than a bus stop leap out of 201, for the slow trip south.

Dinner was sourced from one of the many McDonalds in Croydon, and we made the slow walk back towards the hotel, ready for another early start on the Sunday. It was a good night, other than the AC deciding to go into “deep winter” mode and start putting out air at 30C around 6am (or so) and refused to be changed, and the room got warm rather quickly (I still prefer the mark 1 window to open up for fresh air)

8th May – A random Sunday in London

Anyhow, bags packed with Techni donating his unopened bottle of Pepsi and nearly full deodorant (to save them being thrown in the bin due to airport security), and we departed for the short walk to Croydon, dodging trams and buses to the platform, where 377121 & 377442 did the honours of a short hop to London Victoria. We headed over to the South Eastern side (nothing of interest spotted in the Southern side), and I said farewell as I spotted a required 466 working an Orpington stopper), so it was onto dud 465003 and winner 466040 for the short run to Penge East. Duds 465248 & 465246 did the honours back to Brixton, where the next Orprington service was another 6 car service, but this time the 466 was dud (so was the 465), so I went down to the underground.

First service was due to depart shortly, so I leapt on, but sadly it was duds 11075/11076 which I took to Vauxhall, for a short fester before winners 11003/11004 took me the tiny leap to Pimlico, and a few other duds before I decided to go with 11001/11002 to Victoria, as I wanted to see what unit was working a Canterbury service, sadly that was a dud 465/9, and nothing else of interest floating around I decided to head down to the district line platforms for a linear hop to Cannon Street.

Winner 21487/21488 provided relief from the heat for the short hop to Westminster, but I didn’t want to hang around for long due to armed police so it was to Embankment on duds 21359/21360 before winner 21485/21486 to Cannon Street, where I made it in time for a semi-fast service towards Gillingham, so checking the 376 on a stopper was dud, I jumped onto duds 465176 & 465190 and made use of the toilet for the short run to Greenwich.

The 5 minute frequency on the Lewisham line doesn’t kick in until around 11am I think as it was still 10 minute frequency, however I spotted a pair of winners heading down to Lewisham which should be back in 12 minutes, so turning down a trio of duds, I took a seat watching some South Eastern RPIs get their penalty fare books out with fare dodgers, before winners 71 & 60 (and dud 92) took me forward for the longish run to Westferry, where a quick check of RTT suggested a couple of C2C services were due so it was duds 61, 48 & 27 to take me to Limehouse, where I changed over to the C2C platforms, where I spotted my last 357/2 heading away towards Southend, so something to bare in mind I through. First service towards Fenchurch was a pair of duds, but the 2nd service was dud 357028 leading winner 357031 so jumping onto 031 for the short run to Fenchurch Street, and back out again on the same pair of duds I turned down earlier (357030 & 357001) back to Limehouse, crossing over to the DLR platforms to grab a winner DLR unit in the shape of 123 attached with duds 114 & 135 for the tiny leap to Westferry.

Duds 90-22-09 took me forward to Blackwell, followed by a pair of winners from Bank, in the shape of 55 & 25 to Canning Town, where I leapt onto a Jubilee line service a few moments before the doors closed, to find out that it was winners 96069 & 96032, with the next Stratford bound service showing as 5 minutes away (must have been be a North Greenwich terminator up next) I stayed on to Stratford, to cross over to the Central line where I scored a pair of required 92 stock units in the shape of 91303 & 92416 attached to duds 92046 & 91089 for the long run to Liverpool Street (having been faced with a 10+ minute wait for the next Liverpool Street service, which would have been dud as it would be a pair of 315s or a pair of 360s), I crossed over to the Sub Surface Line and allowed a dud Hammersmith & City line service to depart as a metropolitan line service was a minute behind, and I was rewarded with a required S8 in the shape of 21025/21026 for the 2 and bit mile run to Kings Cross St Pancras.

I’ve previously noted that there is a period where 4 southbound EMT services are ‘timed’ to be HSTs and as its Sunday they all call at Bedford and either Luton serviced, and as two are from Leeds it will be a safe bet to say they would be HST. The 12:30 to Sheffield is also timed to be a HST, but that turned out to be a very un-HST like 222004, so it was onto the 12:10 towards Nottingham, formed of duds 222017 & 222023 for the speedy run to Bedford to link up with the first southbound HST, which was dud, so I had a nice 30 minute fester before the first Leeds service was due to roll in. Meanwhile 222004 arrived nice and early and had a good fester before it’s departure time (as it would be timed for the slower to accelerate HSTs rather than 222s which are like rockets). Anyhow, with Thameslink only being 2 an hour to Bedford (due to engineering works south of Croydon, you could have through they would run a 4 an hour service with 2 an hour being turned around at St Pancras or Blackfriars), so it was a peaceful station, until dud 43061 rolled in with winner 43055 on the rear, first stop Luton Airport.

At Luton Airport it was a short wait before dud 319001 rolled in to take me to Luton where it terminated, and I awaited the arrival of the next HST from Leeds, sadly this was dud, but a northbound HST was due, so it was over to the other platform as winner 43066 rolled in with dud 43076 on the rear, to Bedford, for a short wait before duds 222014/222022 rolled in, I would have waited for the following service (another timed for HST service from Nottingham which comes from the depot), but I wanted to hunt down that 357/2. Back at St Pancras, and to the underground, where I noticed there were still an awful lot of people waiting around for Eurostar departures. The metropolitan line was suspended south of Harrow on the Hill, so it was a 6 minute wait for the next Hammersmith & City line service, formed of duds 21373/21374 which I decided to stay on for the long and slow journey (Is it just me or do the S7s seem to be very slow off the mark) to West Ham.

It was over to the C2C island platform, to await the arrival of what I through was going to be a winning 357/2, it rolled in and both were dud. I decided to await the next service just in case I missed up arrivals and the Shoeburyness service was after the Southend service, and it must have been the case as in rolled my final 357/2, 357207 attached with winner 357019 happy days two winners for the price of one, especially when my 357 requirements are now a mere 6 units (4x /0s, 2x /3s), so I was happy with that, crossing over at Limehouse to the DLR and a blind leap onto a trio of units scored me 120 wedged in the middle of duds 112 & 122 for Westferry. Staying on the same platform and the next service was to Lewisham, and in rolled winners 84, 24 with dud 26 on the end, so it was around the curve to Canary Wharf and back to West India Quay on winners 111 & 129 working a tiny service going backwards and forward between Poplar & Canary Wharf all day long. Over to the other platform, and duds 146-106-113 took me to Westferry, with another couple dud sets before dud 118 and winner 115 popped up to take me to Limehouse, followed by dud another trio with dud 33 leading winner 77 with dud 86 on the end.

I should have stayed on 77 until Bank, but foolishly got off at Shadwell, with the next service going to Tower Gateway, and it was another trio with duds 139 & 110 leading winner 117 to take me to the end of the line with a long walk to Tower Hill, where I leapt on the first service west, to be surprised as it was winner 21305/21306 for the slow trip to Embankment. Firstly I went to the Northern line platform, but the next service wasn’t due for 7 minutes going by the PIS, so I crossed over to the Bakerloo line with duds 3255/3565 making a slow way down to Waterloo. Sadly due to large flow of tourists, I made it to the concourse at Waterloo, just as the train doors on the 17:15 were closing, didn’t help that it was the front 6 coaches leaving a 159 behind. Bugger it, an hour wait for the next train; roll on next Sunday when it will only be a half hour wait.

To Waterloo East, sadly neither 3 options for a leap to Charing Cross gave me anything required (a couple pairs of networkers, and a pair of electrostars), so it was down to the Jubilee line platforms at Southwark for a short wait before winners 96040/96007 rolled in to take me to Waterloo, back to Southwark on winners 96099 & 96114 and a short wait before warm winners 96076/96027 took me back to Waterloo. I was happy to escape the heat of the underground and walk up to the 18:15 to Bristol & Salisbury, the Exeter part being cut short due to crew shortage, and unusually it was a triple set. 159003, 159016 & 159019 for the short run back towards Andover, and with a short drive home to have some dinner and a much needed shower to cool myself down.

Anyhow, a quite successful day in London, 2 more EMT 43 power-cars in the book, 4 more EMUs, a handful of required LU stock plus a few DLR units, I can see myself returning to Bedford in the next couple months on a Sunday to try and hunt down some more EMT power-cars (not to mention the double 222s)

Phew! That was a marathon read. Despite the railway gods conspiring against you at times, you certainly had a reasonable haul for the weekend. I see that you managed to find one of my last three all-time 1992ts - 92046.

I agree with you about those seats on the EMT HST's - too low. OK for commuter type journeys on the MML but not for all day treks.

Well done on getting your last TPE 170 - those 170/3s were of course familiar at one time on the line that passes through the Kingdom of Grateley.

Shame about your i-pod!

Congrats on the 455s and 170/3s! Sounds like a brilliant weekend! Personally I think that the EMT HST seats are very good and are the right height because you can see over them. The armrests aren't great as you said but I still think that they're very good.

Indeed they were used for a time on SWT, although I can't remember that far back. The seats are low in terms of height from the ground, but good in that you can see over the top of them (unlike a GW HST with the high back seats).

A most excellent 20 minute read, and wow the DLR was good to you. As was London in general on Sunday after I left! No doubt if I'd been hanging around as per the original plan, I'd have scored a fair bit too.

When we first lost the IC70 interior on the Western, I was gutted as it meant the loss of comfortable seats. However, it wasn't long until the wonder of moveable armrests made up for it, and I've found the seats on the Western (I believe we've had them for 10 years now) to be just fine. I do miss being able to identify empty seats from the vestibules mind, but high-back seating has proved better as you don't feel so stiff afterwards now.

Point there being that I can't wait for EMT to banish their fixed armrests, in this day and age they belong in a museum. It could be argued the MML is a museum piece mind...

Well a quick post work spin to Reading tonight scored me 165128 in it's current 3-car hybrid formation with the centre coach of 166209, but probably more importantly my last XC Voyager.

Although Reading was in a stake of chaos with delays and cancellations caused by flooding around Swindon, so I was quite happy when 221133 eventually rolled into platform 7 (after waiting for a Penzance bound 'stopper' to clear out of the way)

No more having to keep an eye out for them around New Street.

That's quite an achievement clearing all your Vomit Comets - well done! I still want 17 of the things (plus 4 of the EMT variant) and it's a case of I'll pick them up whenever they cross my path, I get bored or it's the last thing running that I need.

I still need one more of the Virgin fleet, which hopefully will be a case of a grab it if I spot it floating around New Street.

Incredible achievements as always! Pleasure to meet you in Farringdon, I can't believe how much bashing you managed to fit in after leaving the pub :)

As for the IC70 seats, I believe these are also in use on the GEML mk3s? Easily my favourite type of seating, I'd rather do a long journey in one of them than the awful high back stuff you get in standard these days.

Unless something's changed on the GEML since my last visit, aye the IC70 seats are still on the loco-hauled sets. Don't get me wrong, it's not they're uncomfortable, just not suited to an all day travel. This was evidenced by the fact me and Kite stood from Cleethorpes to Bedford on the way back last weekend!

Congr--- You must have been very happy at clearing your XC 221s! We-- Do--!

Sorry - can't bring myself to say it ;)

Wouldn't that just have been to get thrash from the powercars ;)

165128 seems to follow me around, it's the 16x I've had most often in recent months. It should be quite unlikely to get it as the Thames Valley stopper has a high unit requirement.

Looks like you had a great couple of days, although a HST tour is a bit beyond the Pale for me ;).
The day you two did the tour was the same day I was in Manchester and I considered a spin on 170308/170303 when I saw them at the airport - then I spotted a required 185 on a Middlesborough service and it was no contest :)

13th May – Hitchin a Lift

A quiet-ish evening trip up to London on Friday the 13rd, with information that a few of my remaining units were out and about, with a rough plan thrown together to give some sort of idea where they might be located. As usual it was a drive to Andover for the 14:38, running a few minutes late today, but was formed of 158881, 159102 & 159017, with the run to Clapham Junction pushing 159017 over the thousand mile mark, and as usual I was in the front coach of the 158 where it was quiet.

At Clapham Junction, it was a short walk over to the Windsor line side and to platform 5-6 island, I decided a plus 3 at Putney probably wasn’t worth the risk as duds 458513 & 458511 rolled in a minute late, so I bailed at Wandsworth Town, completely at the wrong part of the train (why did I think the stairs to the subway were near the rear of the units), anyhow it was a short walk under the subway and up to the London bound platform to await a particular 458/5, and 458516 had kept to diagram, but was slightly busy (only being a single unit rather than the usual double), but I got onto my 2nd last SWT unit and decided to bail at Clapham Junction. I was originally going to bail at Vauxhall to get a bit more than 66 chains under the wheels of the former 458016, but I had a strange feeling that a 377 might produce.

Please note at this time I hadn’t asked for any information on the location of my final 6, 377s, and it would be a luck of the draw if something required popped up in the 5 services I picked as positioning movements to take me to Victoria. During my time at Clapham I saw my first trio of Gatwick Express 387/2s rushing through towards Brighton, and keeping an eye out, 3 of the 5 services were on the suburban side, with the one from Portsmouth running the traditional southern lateness. A pair of 455s were up first, followed by a 377/6 (or was a 7, I wasn’t paying attention once I saw the bottom light), and a dud 377/4 working from London Bridge. Over to platform 12 to await the service from Portsmouth and in rolled winner 377123 with required 377163 being on the rear, a smile on my face as I boarded my last 2 377/1s for a quick visit to the toilet.

Once at Victoria, it was a short walk to the TVM to pick up my BZ6 ticket for later, it was a bit of a gamble just in case of a set swap, and over to the South Eastern side. A dud 465/9 was on the first highlighted service towards Denmark Hill, so I gave that a miss and went over towards P7 to await the arrival of the service from Dartford. Dud 465243 was leading winner 465166 my last standard class only 465, leaving many more 465/9s left to find [something I might not do until I do a linear hop down the Maidstone East line]. Anyhow needless to say I boarded 166 and after Wandsworth Road we crossed over to the LO lines, to Denmark Hill, where I decided to bail as the 465 was quite warm and busy. The next Victoria bound service was a single 465, which I gave a miss and waited for the next Thameslink service, formed of 319434 & 319424 for the short run to Blackfriars.

I had around 45 minutes to kill before 387202 would have made an appearance, with potentially 387121 popping up as a 12-car service from Brighton (with the first due in 15 minutes). But Blackfriars gets quite chilly and the next service from Brighton was “formed only of 8 coaches”, and checking RTT saw that the service 202 was meant to be on was cancelled, so I decided to jump onto the next service to Farringdon, 377207 & 377501. A small bit of LU bashing saw me grab 21101/21102 for the short hop to Barbican, returning to Farringdon on 21089/21090 and squeezing onto 21371/21372 on a Hammersmith service to Kings Cross St Pancras.

With time to fester I walked slowly to platform 6 where a trio of 365s was on a semi-fast Peterborough service (first stop strangely being Hitcin), I had hope as winner 365528 was on the rear, a slow walk up and dud 365511 was in the middle, crossing my fingers to ID the front unit, only for hope to be lost as it wasn’t 501, instead dud 365535. It was a slow walk back to grab one of the few bay seats in the motor coach of 528 for the speedy run to Hitchin, which is always a good move with lovely motor noise from the 365 at high speed. It was a short walk to the other platform to await the next southbound service, formed of duds 365531 & 365524 to take me to Stevenage. Earlier in the day I got information that the next 2 southbound VTEC service were duds, but for some reason I through they might have been swapped over, but was still 91131 & 91101, so it was onto 365503 working a fast service to Finsbury Park, where I asked my source if any of my remaining 4 377s were due around Victoria, to get confirmation that one was due to work a service to East Grinstead.

Dud 2009 stock 11069/11070 took me for the 5 and a half mile spin through the tunnels of the Victoria line to Victoria, and with a semi-fast walk took me over to platform 18. Dud 377152 was on the rear, 377319 was in the middle and winner 377317 was on the front, happy days, only 3 to go, as I took a comfy seat for the short run to Clapham Junction. Back to Waterloo on duds 455714 & 455903, to be able to grab a prime seat on the 20:20 to Exeter, formed tonight of 159008 & 159020, and as this was a “reverse” spilt where the front unit went out of service at Salisbury, I took a seat in the front unit (as it was quieter than the rear unit) for the run back to Andover.

6 new units into my book which is always good, plus a trio of S-stocks putting a smaller dent in my requirements for them, one of these days I will catch up with 387121 and finally get it into my book.

14th May – A trip to Cheshire

I had plans for a small day to pick up some shacks in the Cheshire area, so with Cheshire Day Rover in hand, plus many other tickets, I walked to Grateley station for the 05:59 service, which was formed today of 159018, one of my sub-thousand mile units, for the short spin to Basingstoke, nothing unusual with the trip and I was soon boarding 165127 to take me to Reading to grab a bite to eat before heading down to platform 12 where the 07:15 XC towards Manchester was due in (I hear the groans from Quinn now).

Seeing as all my XC voyagers have now been cleared, it was no surprise as dud 220001 rolled in, for a slow run up the midland of the country via Oxford, Banbury, Coventry, World’s End, Stafford and finally arriving into Stoke pretty much bang on time, having been held outside Stone for 5 minutes for a 390 to arrive first. My first order of the day was to take in some fresh air and walk to the bay where dud 323235 forming the local stopper service for some 323 thrash with the high-speed dash from Stoke to Kidsgrove, and onto my first new shack of the day at Congleton. A nice enough station which I’ve been passed many times but never stopped [I reckon that honour of “going through a station without ever stopping there” must now go to those local shacks north of Newcastle towards Berwick].

The southbound service was on time and in rolled winner 323227 to take me back towards Kidsgrove, making a note of a large Tesco store nearby which could be handy if the EMT service to Crewe was dud, and 10 minutes later a dud 156 rolled in and I went for a walk, reaching the Tesco around 5 minutes later to pick up items for lunch, as it saves a job when in Crewe. Back to Kidsgrove and in rolled dud 350118 to take me to Crewe, where a cross platform interchange was had to platform 1 where dud 323238 was waiting on the Manchester Piccadilly via the Airport service. I was a bit worried about a late departure caused by a late running ATW service, but thankfully we departed on time to the first stop and my last 323 served shack, Sandbach.

Another nice peaceful Cheshire shack, with 3 platforms, although I’m guessing the 3rd is rarely used, even though it’s got a PIS unit displayed, and it wasn’t a long fester before dud 323233 rolled in (I guess wishing for 229 to show up would be too much to ask!) to take me back down the line to Crewe for a 25-odd minute fester for the next Chester shuttle. Making a note that a 175 was departing from platform 12 before taking a seat next to platform 9, to await the ATW service, timed perfectly well… to miss a LM Birmingham service. Dud 150284 was on the shuttles today, so grabbing a seat at one of the half tables in the leading coach for the non-stop run towards Chester, passing the 90 ‘graveyard’, rolling into platform 1.

My focus now shifted to the Mid Cheshire line services, a dud 156 was buffer blocking in one of the bay platforms, and a 2-car 175 plus one half of a 175 was sat in the sidings to the north of the station (the half coach missing it’s engine) and I wondered what the NRDMUG would throw up (could it be a 156, a 150 or even a delightful Quinn), and in rolled dud 150119, to take me to Cuddington, the crossover station with normally a 4 minute connection and a barrow crossing between platforms. I said normally, but as the next Chester bound working was 5 down at this point it turned into a +9, before mega dud 156425 rolled in with winner 150268 on the rear, and it was local doors only for both units as the rear of the 150 overhung the platform, so it was onto the 156 (strangely the gangway wasn’t connected between the units), to take me to Mouldsworth for a 30-odd minute fester.

Good news for those bashers who enjoy an adult beverage, as there appeared to be a pub nearby the station, and also a hairdresser in the former station building. Taking a seat and I relaxed to await the return of the set, with fresh dud 150268 leading super-mega-had 10 times already-dud 156425 on the rear, and it was into the 156 for the short run back to Delamere, the station in the forest, with a nice looking café which was busy with cyclists and other people making use of the nice day to walk in the forest. Anyhow it wasn’t long before dud 150224 rolled in to take me back to Chester, the end of my little trip on the Mid-Cheshire line, it was over to platform 7 to await the next ATW service towards Manchester via Warrington, and in rolled dud 175115, the only pervious time I’ve had this unit is from Chester to Helsby a couple years ago, and like before I alighted at Helsby to await for the guard & driver to come back from their little break and unlock the doors on dud 156464 which was working the Ellesmere Port services this afternoon.

The first service had myself and another passenger on, but I was alone in alighting at Standlow & Thornton which has quite long platforms, and no public access (as one side of the footbridge is blocked off and the other side leads down into the refinery site, a bit like British Steel Redcar. Some old garage units for shelter, before 156464 reappeared as I talked with the guard for the short hop to Ince & Elton, which has a barrow crossing to cross between platforms, and not a lot else. Loadings on the Helsby service was around 5 passengers, loadings on the next Ellesmere Port service was 3 as I reboarded 156464 passed the industrial buildings to Ellesmere Port and remained on board, this time I was alone, and it was back out of the wilderness onto the main line, where I alighted at Runcorn East.

Over the footbridge and to the other platform, and dud 175105 took me back to my final shack of the day in the shape of Frodsham and with 30 minutes to kill I headed to the nearby Morrisons, and a good thing I did. My original plan involved bailing at Newton-Le-Willows for some 319 thrash back to Manchester; all was good with the 17:06 (ish) reported to be “on time”, until a couple minutes before it was due when the PIS updated to say expected 17:20. Eventually around 17:25, dud 175002 rolled in, nothing from the guard saying why the service was running late or to say sorry (a quite poor showing from ATW), eventually we rolled into Piccadilly around 24 minutes late, so my options for linear hopping to Stockport had pretty much gone up in smoke, with the only option being a dud 185 bound for Cleethorpes, not even enough time to dash out to Sainsburys (hence why I was thankful I had a Morrisons baguette in my bag). Due to engineering works, it wasn’t 001 taking me home today, but 220007 for the long trip back to Basingstoke, yes XC might be cheaper when it comes to some creative splits, but going via London would be a lot quicker (probably).

Unusually this service calls at Congleton, and kept good timings without being too busy, I was in my usual seat (D53) which had a good window view, for the trip, rolling into Basingstoke pretty much bang on time, allowing me a slow walk over to catch the 22:14 towards Yeovil (would be the 21:20 from Waterloo), formed of another sub thousand mile unit in the shape of 159022. A short walk home and I was tired, part caused by not sleeping that well on the Friday night, part caused by a busy week, so I decided to stay indoors on the Sunday, to attack the garden.

2 new units in the book, but 9 more shacks which is what I was aiming for today, the ones remaining on the Mid-Cheshire will be better to grab from Manchester on a Wayfarer, and I still want to have a good fast run on a Northern 319. Anyhow some pictures:

Some excellent reads good sir :)

I've always fancied doing Congleton, it is on the list to be done eventually and preferably before Northern get rid of their Starships. You've reminded me of its existance, as well as how much I need up north. The list of trips to make is getting incredibly long, but thanks to Southern seemingly making it impossible to get a proper bash on a DaySave now, I can now add in some other trips in their place.

Sounds like a really productive evening in London! Shame 387121 and 202 didn't produce (along with 365501) but it sounds like you got some 377s to make up for it! I was groaning when I read how you got to Cheshire, that's for sure ;)! Sounds like a good day was had there too! It sounds like I got Sandbach and Runcorn East before you then ;)

Another couple of fruitful days there sir. Shame about things not producing in London but that's bashing for you! At least the winning 377s were suitable compensation.

I've often thought about a Cheshire day rover to attack some of the shacks in the neighbourhood as well as two small pieces of track that I need. You have certainly given me yet more food for thought on potential moves in that part of the world.

I'm happy I managed to clear Southern last year before the DaySaves became quite hard to locate. I finally got Congleton out of the way, as I've flown past it many times on route to/from Manchester, might be easy enough for you to get on a WMDR with a day return from Kidsgrove to Congleton [which was my original plan before the day turned into a Cheshire day].

But have you got those two shacks between Ellesmere Port & Helsby? ;) It might not have been pretty but going via XC was cheaper (I still miss the advance availability from the 05:27 to Waterloo). Hopefully those GTR units will soon pop up, another request to my secret source at locations [as it makes life a bit easier, the 387s will be easier to get than that 365 as it could be working a Cambridge Cruiser service, or a service first stop Royston/Biggleswade)

Ooo, what two small pieces of track do you need in that area Keith? (I'm guessing the PSUL around the freight lines south of Warrington is one)?

Nothing that exotic I'm afraid - and a second check reveals that it's more than two bits. I'm after these bits
West Cheshire Junction to Helsby - i.e. Ince & Elton to Helsby
Mickle Trafford Junction to Mouldsworth - i.e. Chester to Mouldsworth
Heald Green South Junction to Heald Green West Junction - i.e Manchester Airport to Styal

And there I was expecting the tale of "how Kite cleared his 377s"! You're slipping ;)

Good reads and decent progress as ever, mind :)

At least the first two are easy enough to do (and if your out on the Ellesmere Port services you might as well clear the two shacks). The Airport avoider is a tad more trickier to do.

-------

Thanks Kris, IIRC my last 2 377/4s were floating around, but 377313 was sitting looking all 377-like at Horsham sidings, so those 3 are for another day. Probably with help when they are meant to show up (i.e. no point searching for them if they are not out or down doing Brighton -Southampton services)

-----

I've just thrown together a rough plan to attack those ATW shacks around Shrewsbury station, I could probably do them in a couple saturdays (involving some long festers), but god knows how much it would cost for an area lacking in day rangers, I suspect that plan might change somewhat and turn into a multi-day trip involving a "Explore North and Mid Wales Pass", which will probably come into play next year.

It's not the airport avoider that I need - that would be Heald Green North to South junctions. Did that many moons ago long before the airport line was built. The curve that I need is coming out of the airport and heading south to Styal as done by the hourly Crewe services. Just a case of never having been in the right place at the right time.

Same here Keith - I've had the avoider but not the direct route.

Very surprised at hardcore bashers having not done Manchester Airport South Curve! Dud in both directions for me, first time over it would have been 2007 I believe on the 0050 Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly via the airport. Hard to believe how long ago that was...

I should be getting it in early July though! I had the avoider on a service train that was booked to go via Stockport but got diverted. 175102.
