This route passes through some of the most picturesque parts of northern Derbyshire and we take time to admire some local views, being thankful to have come by train as this affords us views that a car driver on the narrow road cannot experience, but time means a return back to the railway station where we board the 1730 Northern service to Sheffield that arrives there at 1806 on Wednesday afternoon.

We ponder taking the 13-past Northern service to Leeds... but when the unit turns up we realise we would much rather take the 18:18 service instead! This turns out to be a good choice as we overtake the 18:13 and end up in Leeds at 19:23 on Wednesday.

Having sampled light rail systems in other parts of the country we change our mode in the 'Steel City' as we make our way up to the Supertram platform where we decide to go 'all the way' to Halfway on the 18:14 Blue Route Sheffield Supertram arriving 18:44 on Wednesday

Enjoying the north, at Leeds we then board the 20.08 XC service to Edinburgh arriving at 23.03 on Wednesday evening

Still time to make an onward rail journey, so we board the 2323 First ScoRail service to Dunblane that arrives at 0036 on Thursday morning.

We find overnight accommodation before returning later the same morning to catch the 06:46 Scotrail service to Glasgow Queen Street (High Level), arriving at 07:34 Thursday morning

Time to examine our onward options on this railway station with its differing levels and we decide the call of the west coast is too strong to resist, so making our way to the departure platform, we board the 0821 First ScotRail service to Oban that arrives there at 1127 on Thursday morning.

We take a brisk walk up to see McCaig's Tower, a folly and prominent local landmark before returning to the station to catch the 12:56 FSR service to Arrochar arriving 14:42 on Thursday

It is one and the same; though the journey planner i referenced only listed it as Arrochar.

I used the first available train service departing Oban; didn't look too much into local bus services..

We find ourselves in one of those locations where the nearest bus stop is not near to the railway station, effectively ruling out this mode of travel to some interesting locations (this used to be allowed at one time on this quiz where the bus stop was less than five minutes walk away from the railway station as a change of mode was to be made). The rail service to and from this station is sparse to say the least and any thoughts of a local ferry are also ruled out as that too would require a walk to there from the railway station, so after seeing every single one of the the sights that are to be had here, we decide the first train anywhere will do, so we board the 1936 First ScotRail service to Arisaig that arrives there at 2319 on Thursday evening.

Having found lodging in the quaintly-named Arisaig Hotel, we have another early start, catching the 06:19 First ScotRail service to Dalmuir, arriving at 11:10 on Friday morning.

A cross-country rail journey now sees a good idea, so we board the 1135 First ScotRail service to Edinburgh that arrives there at 1313 on Friday afternoon.

We wander outside only to find no bus information, and so we wander back inside and board the 13:30 East Coast service to York arriving there at 15:53 Friday afternoon.

We cross over the road and board the 16:41 First West & North Yorkshire #1 bus alighting at York, Theatre Royal Stop B (on St Leonard's Place) arriving 17:01 Friday afternoon

We find ourselves in a less than salubrious suburb of the city...and the bus has just departed. Luckily we don't have long to wait for another; such is the frequency. We board the 17:50 First West & North Yorkshire service 1 to York Railway Station arriving at 18:08 on Friday.

Time is moving on, so a mode of travel change presents itself to us in our present situation, so we enter the railway station and board the 1840 First TPE service to Warrington Central that arrives there at 2030 on Friday evening.

We seem to be caught up in the 'rail ale crowd' and find ourselves aboard the 22:18 Northern departure, but manage to get off at Mirfield arriving 22:43 on Friday

After a cold wait, we then board the 23:53 Transpennine Express service to Leeds arriving at 0031 on an early Saturday morning

A night-time cross-Pennine run next as we board the 0220 First TPE service to Manchester Airport that arrives there at 0400 on Saturday morning.

We make our way up stairs to the adjoining bus station to catch the 04:36 Stagecoach Manchester 43 to Manchester, Piccadilly Gardens, arriving at 05:20 Saturday morning

After going for a quick cup of coffee we head over to catch the 06:01 Manchester Metrolink service to Manchester Victoria Station arriving at 06:06.

Here we are afforded the opportunity to take a bus ride in the Lake District, so after seeing the local shops whilst we wait, we return to the bus stands outside the railway station (and Booth's supermarket) where we board the 1106 Stagecoach in Cumbria service 555 to Keswick bus station that arrives there at 1212 on Saturday afternoon.
