As that bus speeds away to its depot, we rapidly discover it was the last service of the day either to or from Leominster.

So we have a leisurely evening meal before walking back to the rail station to catch the ATW service at 2037 and snooze the miles away to Carmarthen, where we arrive at 0018 in the early hours of Wednesday morning

We managed to persuade a night porter of the need for an overnight stay (with money up front and a big tip in advance), an early morning alarm call and a full Welsh breakfast, which sets up nicely for the day and we make our way to the bus station,where we board the 0657 Arriva Cymru service 40 to Aberystwyth bus station which arrives at 0848 on Wednesday morning.

We decide to have a leisurely day, so have a second breakfast and then take the 1030 VoR steam train to Devils Bridge, arriving at 1130

To have an opportunity to make the journey in reverse, but not on the train we arrived on, is not one to be missed, so we use the time at Devils Bridge to see all railway connected points of interest, then to see much of the surrounding area, before boarding the 1600 Vale of Rheidol service to Aberystwyth VoR railway terminal at 1700 on Wednesday afternoon.

We decide on a change of scenery, and take the ATW 1730 departure and travel through to Birmingham International, arriving at 2050, Wednesday evening

The lure of the South Coast calls us yet again as we board the 2114 XC service to Southampton Central that arrives at 2343 on Wednesday night.

05:15 FGW service to Bristol temple Meads. Arrive at 08:17 Thursday morning (enjoy rush hour)

Onwards and northwards by rail, we board the 0900 XC service to Manchester Piccadilly that arrives there at 1159 on Thursday morning.

12:11 Transpennine Express to York. Arrive at 13:36 Thursday afternoon.

Off by rail again, but this time in a westerly direction as we board the 1413 Northern service to Poulton le Fylde that arrives there at 1650 on Thursday afternoon.

17:27 Transpennine Express to Manchester Airport. Arrive at 18:47 Thursday Evening.

We continue northward on the 1900 TPE departure and travel to Arnside, arriving at 2032 Thursday evening.


You may recall a few days ago I complained bitterly about arriving at Pembroke Dock at the same time as a bus to Milford Haven left.

I actually made the journey a few days ago - and made the connection as I suspected I would. The train arrived 10 minutes early - given that it's allowed 14 minutes to do 2 miles it's not surprising

Still we can't let reality interfere with the quiz.......

We watch the waters flow under the long viaduct until it is time to board the 2133 First TPE service to Ulverston that arrives there at 2154 on Thursday evening.

We decide to call it a day, and resume our travels at the civilised hour of 0922 next day on Stagecoach's X35 service to Kendal Bus Station, arriving at 1025, Friday morning

Only a short time to wait for our onwards omnibus connection from the bus station and we board the 1040 Stagecoach in Cumbria service 555 to Keswick bus station that arrives there at 1212 on Friday afternoon.

55 bus at 12:25 to Windermere Railway station. Arrive at 13:24 Friday afternoon. (some time to go for a nice tea and scones at the cafe's in Windermere please!)

We continue at 1400 on TPE's service to Oxenholme Lake District, arriving at 1419 on Friday afternoon

Moving northwards by rail, we board the 1528 First TPE service to Penrith (North Lakes) that arrives at 1553 on Friday afternoon.

We catch Grand Prix bus 563 at 1606 and travel to Kirkby Stephen Market place arriving 1718 Friday afternoon

Time to take in some sightseeing of the town, then to have a light meal, before going to the railway station for yet another northwards journey over a dramatic landscape and we board the 1952 Northern service to Carlisle that arrives there at 2052 on Friday evening.

We have a quick look around Carlisle, then join the 21:34 TransPennine Express service to Manchester Oxford Road, arriving 23:21 Friday

Time for a change of mode of travel, so we walk from the railway station to the bus stop where we can board the 1250 First in Suffolk and Norfolk service X1 to Gorleston Town Centre that arrives at 1340 on Saturday afternoon.

Continuing by a local bus service northwards along the coast, we board the 1425 First in Norfolk and Suffolk service 3 to California (Caravan Park) that arrives there at 1449 on Saturday afternoon.

Up to 1959, you could have made this journey by rail to California Halt on the original Midland and Great Northern Line that had a number of halts upon it.

The name seems to be the most attractive thing about the place. Luckily there is onward transport within a few minutes in the form of First's 1A service at 1458 to Martham adj the Green, arriving at 1517 on Saturday afternoon.

We find somewhere to have tea and cakes, then a leisurely stroll around the area for an hour afterwards before deciding to relocate by bus to a larger settlement, so we board the 1659 First in Suffolk and Norfolk service 1A to Lowestoft bus station that arrives there at 1833 on Saturday afternoon.

We decide to catch the 1908 GA service to Saxmundham, arriving 1956, Saturday evening

Time of the day for a visit to a local restaurant as there is two-hour wait for the next train southwards and suitably replenished, we return to the railway station to board the 2156 GA service to Ipswich that arrives there at 2236 on Saturday night.

We catch the National Express service 250 at 0002 hours and travel to Heathrow T4 arriving at 0325 Sunday morning.
