I'm not so sure it is allowed unless forced by lack of onward transport:

You shouldn't wait for more than two hours after the first available service (to any destination) has left, after allowing for the minimum interchange time

Admittedly it is sometimes difficult to tell what the first available service is (as in the case of Chichester/Ringwood a page or so back), sometimes easier (as in the case of Greater Manchester, Brighton or London which have a comprehensive night bus service.)

So if we are going to say that after a certain time in the evening you don't have to keep travelling, that needs to be made specific and a time defined.

You are correct in that such a rule is not stated per se; however, there have been several occasions on this game where I have broken a journey overnight, mainly down the reasons you mention with it being difficult to tell when the next available service is in slightly more obscure locations. Not only that, but by us halting matters, the game comes to a complete stop and is like the M25 at 8am on a Monday morning!

So I think it's best if we leave them be, unless such events have happened at busy stations such as Clapham Junction or Manchester Piccadilly.
