My understanding was that it is unreasonable to wait a long time at stations where there is a frequent service, regardless of where services are going. Have a look at the Stowmarket/Clapham Junction example on the first page. I could be wrong though!

In the case we are discussing I wanted to go to Carstairs because of the journey opportunities from there - and in the real world it would have made sense to change at Glasgow Central to avoid the long wait. In the game there was only a very small chance that the next move after Glasgow would be to Carstairs, so it made sense to wait!

You're quite right about the interpretation, and waiting as you did was certainly within the rules. I guess its prudent to think as if you were really travelling. Would you wait that long because you really wanted to go there or move on quicker? That's how I try and think anyway but ultimately it's up to the player! I find it all good fun, it's a little tedious when wr spend multiple days on small islands or in very rural Scotland though, but that's just my own view!

• • Night services in the UK can be quite limited, so when the previous move arrives at its destination after 2300 you are allowed to wait until 0500 the next day if you wish.

The rules quote above does seem clear in its meaning.

Partly my fault - will explain in an edit. Edit: I initially posted the train to Barrow when we were at Heald Green, but was pipped as you suggest. However it immediately became clear that we could catch the same train from Manchester Airport, so I edited the post rather than deleting and rewriting it, which would have been clearer. Apologies for contributing to the confusion!
