With nothing more reachable tonight, we take advantage of the overnight rule and then 5 minutes (0.3 mile) to St Cuthberts Way / WMC where we board the 0732 Arriva North East service 7, getting to Darlington (Northgate) at 0753 on Saturday.

The first bus service through Newton Aycliffe on a Saturday is at 0652, so a 0732 start is within the rules.

As our next available service isn't until 0925, we wait that bit longer and board the 0956 Scarlet Band service 16, alighting at Harrowgate Hill Roundabout at 1019 on Saturday.

Ooh this is a strange one, it looks as if it's only in one direction then turns into the 108 coming back. So, if I've understood the timetable correctly, we have no choice other than to wait out for the 1440 Scarlet Band service 109 to Willington (Laburnum Gardens), arriving there at 1445 on Saturday afternoon.

I'm wondering whether it would be helpful and interesting to know what journey planners, etc., contributors generally use?

Not to get anyone to change, but to see how people get the results they do???

Personally for buses I use Google or Bus Times.
I find Bus Times is comprehensive, but Google will point out to me if I could make the same journey but leaving earlier, which is sometimes an "error" that is picked up on.

I also use Bus Times for journey planners, because it lists every service from every stop in the country which is fantastic, however as I mentioned with Paul before in Liverpool the other day for example it's not the best at picking up precise locations. I tend to use Google Maps to find out where we are first, then look at the bus times by clicking on that stop. Trains I use Real Time Trains.

Anyway, plodding along from Langley Moor, we next board the 1518 Go North East Angel service 21 to Newcastle (John Dobson Street/Carliol Street), arriving there at 1639 on Saturday afternoon.

Well that's it for the rest of the day for both bus and rail, so in the morning we return for the 0858 Northern service 2N03 to Carlisle, arriving there at 1134 on Sunday morning.

THere appear to be no buses in Silecroft or much of the surrounding area, so we next take 2C49, the 1528 Northern service, alighting at Whitehaven at 1609 on Sunday.

Struggling to find anything else on a Sunday evening here (but happy to be over ruled if there is in fact anything).

On this basis we will wait overnight until Monday morning and catch the 0618 Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire service 2X service to Lancaster, George Street arriving at 0642 on Monday morning.

I think these last 3 trips are actually one journey on one vehicle...
