We take the 500 yard walk to Ryde Esplanade railway station, getting a coffee on the way, and wait for the 10:47 Island Line service 2D21 to Brading where we arrive at 10:58 on Wednesday morning.

We next board the 1145 Wightlink service to Portsmouth Harbour, arriving there at 1207 on Wednesday afternoon.

Well, that's disappointing. I was just about to book us on the hovercraft! Oh well, we wait for the 12:45 South Western Railway service 1P42 to Petersfield where we arrive at 13:17 on Wednesday afternoon. (Unfortunately two minutes too late to catch the Xelabus X17 on its one weekly trip to Bishops Waltham, passing my house on the way.)

Some years ago, we had a short break at the highly recommended Pennyhill Park hotel and spa there. It has a first class restaurant and brasserie.

Google tells me that the railway station is only 140 yards away, so we walk there and board 2N70, South Western Railway's 2118 service from which we alight at Ascot at 2130 on Wednesday.

Well, I was just about to say I'm really struggling to understand why we were going back and forth Surrey and London! Weybridge to Vauxhall, then back to Woking, then Barnes Bridge, then back to Chertsey, then Battersea then back to Surrey, I was starting to feel as if I was on the Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach
