The Statesman - Land Cruise Train

Me and my partner are looking to book the West Highland & Jacobite Statesman tour with Statesman Rail.

I was just wondering if anyone has been on any of their tours and has any feedback?

I have already found out the tour will be diesel hauled, apart from the Jacobite from Fort William to Mallaig.

We are planning on travelling first class from Langley Mill, and as luck would have it we are staying in the same hotel as is featured on the tour when we visit Fort William in December, so will have a good idea on that.

Any views or comments in general with Statesman Rail would be great, short or longer tours.

That's because you pay £50 to secure your booking, you don't pay the full amount straight away.

The one we are travelling, £349 each for a 3 day tour is pretty good, Langley Mill to Fort William, Jacobite Steam trip and Fort William to Langley Mill, first class. I don't think im quite suited to Premier or Pullman dining and don't fancy the 14 mile coach ride to the hotel after spending all day on the train, the hotel for forst class passengers is right next to Fort William station.

If I ever do a tour of Scotland I;d love to do royal scotsman - staying on board etc - looks amazing, and killer prices!

I've not done a trip with Statesman Rail, but despite having only set up this year, they seem to be managing to run planty of trains, so they must be doing a reasonable job. The 2 guys in charge used to run Regency Rail Cruises (which was sold out to VSOE) so they have plenty of experience going back many years.

With regard to Premier Dining, I've done dining with a few operators on occasions, and never felt out of place as such, even though the passengers in those coaches tend to be a bit older. I must admit I did find it amusing when 4 of us once did a HRT trip dining and we had notebooks and rail atlases sharing the table with crockery!

Caught a shot of this on my last visit to Scotland, West Coast Railways class 47, 47804, with the The Royal Scotsman headboard, in the sidings at Aviemore.

The tour passed us later in the week between Aberdeen and Inverness, from the quick view I got from our class 158, it looked very nice indeed.
