Hi I am very Intersted in the S&DJR and I have visited a few locations over the years armed with my trusty Somerset & Dorset Then & Now book by Mac Hawkins which dates from around 1995. A lot of it is the same today as it was then so most of the info given here is from the book but if anyone has any updates I would be very grateful. This info is for anyone who may be interested in the S&DJR.

Starting at the southern end
stations semaining or remaining features at stations

Spettisbury
Started life as a station but down graded to a halt. Buildings demolished both platforms remain. When I last visited in october I met a lady who was removing vegetation from the platforms. A local group hope to build a replica station building and open up a Tea room on the old up platform on this section trailway.

Charlton Marshall Halt
Both platforms remain

Blandford forum
Although the station is long gone and houses built on it's location a footbridge along with the station house, base of the water tower and a very short bit of track with a buffer stop show that a railway was once there.

Stourpaigne & Durweston Halt
This single platform halt remains but in a derelict condition

Shillingstone
The station building and platforms remain and looking very much like a railway station again thanks to the shillingstone station project
www.shillingstonestation-project.co.uk

Henstridge
Although the station no longer remains the old crossing gates survive but in a bad state

Templecombe upper
Now the new platform has opened up at Templecombe im not sure how long the old platforms wuill remain

Cole
The Station Building remains as a house

Evercreech Junction
The Station Buildings remain as houses

Evercreech New
Housing now built on the station site but a little section of station railings from the up platform i thing still exist between a row of houses and garages

Masbury Halt
Station Buildings and platforms remain as a private residence

Chilcompton
As far as I am aware put of the down platform remains in undergrowth

Midsommer Norton
Looking like a railway station again

www.sdjr.co.uk

Wellow
The station building remains as a private house. This was once owned by the Artist Peter Blake who designed The Beatles Sgt Pepper album cover. The only surviving S&D signal box is also at Wellow as a private house.

Midford
The platform remains as part of a cycle trail which is to be opened to Bath.

Bath Green Park

Although part of Sainsburys carpark the station overall roof along with the buildings have been beautifly restored.

Pylle

station building and goodshed remain

West Pennard

Station building and goodshed remain

Edington Junction
a large portion of the island platform remains

Bason Bridge

The platform remains in undergrowth

Cossington

Tunnels and Viaducts

Pitcombe Viaduct (Just south of Cole station)

This well maintained viaduct is a 27 arch curving structure 67ft high and 317 yards long

Bath Road viaduct (Septon Mallet

Winsor Hill Tunnel
Both bores walkable

Hamwood viaduct
this is a 5 arch structure

Chilcompton Tunnel
Only southern end bores remain northern end infilled

North Somerset Viaduct (also known as 5 Arches)

Can be walked over (on the S&D) and under (the old GWR North Somerset line) just south of Radstock

Home Farm Viaduct
The truncated remains of this viaduct believe it or not has been coverted into a private house.

Wellow Viaduct
is a 4 arched structure

Midford Viaduct
is walkerble and is above what remains of the old viaduct of the Lympley Stoke to Camerton line made famous in the opening scene in the Titfield Thunerbolt film.

Look out for the book 'The Somerset and Dorset-Aftermath of the Beeching Axe' by Tim Deacon (Oxford Publishing company) published in 1995, very good account of what happened to the 'S&D' after closure

It makes you wonder if the line was live and running how much difference it would make to those living on the route, and whether TOCs would make full use of it.

part of the trackbed near Templecombe us used by the Gartell Light Railway http://newglr.weebly.com/index.html. now private land, but does hold open days.

While much remains of the S&D much has gone also. there is a book published of "then and now", to stand where Ivo Peters took one of his legendary shots, you would have to stand by the deli counter at the Sainsbury's which now occupies the site.

As for use today, the line was single in places and steeply graded - double heading was commonplace.. However, the line was built to provide a north - south coast link, and the rerouting of the Pines Express left it with little traffic
