The service with the most stops?

I was thinking about some of the various stopping services that exist, and I was wondering if anyone knew the rail service which calls at the most number of stations.

It has to be a National Rail public service in the timetable - no London Underground or tram/metro services.

I am discounting Merseyrail as even though they are part of National Rail they operate a sort of metro-style service.

I think some of the South West Trains stoppers or Scotrail Highland services could be contenders.

Pretty unlikely - most of the Peterboro stuff is running fast from FP to Stevenage now. And that only saves 5 stops (Knebworth, Welwyn Nth, WGC, Hatfield & Potters Bar).

That is impressive for a relatively short distance service (when compared to XC of course)

Are you counting services which split into 2 trains? The 1754 off Inverness has 37 (38 in summer) stops including Inverness. 4 stations to Dingwall where it splits, 12 stations to Kyle, 21 to Wick.

As frequent (say 2tph or better) services go, the TL stopper between Bedford and Brighton must be up there. The same can be said of any future Shenfield to Maidenhead services on Crossrail. Both (will) have roughly 25-30 stops. Although I guess the Merseyrail disqualification would affect the latter of these two also...

Aye quite correct. Although I have done it since when there has been disruption between Pelaw and South Shields, train ran to South Hylton instead. Done it the other way as well when the cables ahve been knicked at Sunderland, they send more trains to South Shields that would normally go to South Hylton.
