I spent an hour in Hell once. It was the night the clocks went back in Norway and rather than have the train from Bodo arrive an hour 'early' in Oslo Sentral, it sat here for sixty minutes.

That train only would go to Trondheim. This is common procedure on about any overnight train in Europe on that day when the times change- stationstops further on may have waiting passengers. OTOH, on the days the clocks are put forward (start of summertime) those trains run late-and may make up-or not. LOts and loads of oso funny postcards and other memorablia for sale there-in the local languages it has another meaning.

I've certainly experienced this. I was returning to Paris from Spain in the 1980s and we stopped at Brive la Gaillarde for the normal 10 mins or so plus the extra 60. Of course when a night train stops for an extended period light sleepers like me can't sleep as well without the sleep-inducing rumble and gentle rocking of the train

Back to the original topic, this is my commuter line nowadays.... this is Tower A2 junction near Western Ave in Chicago

They seem use open flame point heaters fed by propane (not gasoline!) .... they're slowly being replaced elsewhere on the line with other kinds of heaters - but that is a really busy junction so I don't think it will be easy.

And they do appear to be effective, in that the points seem to work and the trains don't catch fire!
