G'day everyone,

Whilst up in the Motherland (Derbyshire) this Christmas someone remarked that Peak Rail had announced firm plans to extend the line to Hassop with the aim of providing a "Park And Ride" scheme into Bakewell. Now as we all know the only stumbling block is the missing bridge at Rowsley but until Peak Rail have done their 'sums' they are not prepared to give any information on a possible share issue to fund the replacement bridge.

Thoughts anyone?

Kind regards,

Richmond Commuter!

Only stumbling block?

What about, off the top of my head:
- Tunnel under Haddon Hall, condition probably doubtful?
- Industrial estate on the track just west of Bakewell?
- Another one at Rowsley?

And is anyone seriously going to use a P&R for a distance of a mile or so to get to the Bakewell station site which is half a mile from the centre of Bakewell and up a steep hill on the way back?

There are at least two missing bridges at Rowsley as well as any other obstacle. Not that I fundamentally disagree with any Railway re-opening in principle.

Two? From what I've ever seen there is only one missing and that's the one over the A6.

Apart from the above mentioned obstacles between Rowsley and Bakewell, if these could be surmounted would it be easier going after Bakewell if the route were to be reinstated towards Buxton?

From memory it's fairly clear but there is the obvious issue of the walk/cycle trail that now goes through the tunnels as well. The last section into Buxton also retains a single track freight line.

One over the A6 and another smaller one missing over adjacent Church Lane. At least.

I was very pleased to see this reported, as the cover story of, I think, Steam Railway magazine. At present, Peak Rail feels to me like a bit of a short and pointless trip, and an extension into such a major tourist destination as Bakewell would do much to give the line a much needed sense of place and presence and also, hopefully, act as an incentive to encourage additional visitors. It would also, in an indirect way, help to plug Bakewell back into the national rail network.

Sounds like Peak Rail are attempting to create an equivalent to Norden on the Swanage Railway, though I suspect that is more commonly used as a park and ride for Swanage itself (Peak Rail's equivalent would be Matlock) rather than the nearby Corfe Castle, and benefits from the fact that the majority of traffic approaches from the north - not the case in that area of Derbyshire.
