I've heard that 41001 is being restored to operational condition. How on Earth are they going to operate her without her partner? I know she has two cabs, but can they really run round and haul stock from the shunting cab. Hiring a regular power car is probably not an option, but is there anything else that work at the other end of the train. There's also the question of coaching stock. It's not likely that MkIIIs would be available, and I can't really see an HST power car stuck at the end of a rake of MkIs on a heritage line.

Ideas, anyone?

Now that's what I'm talking about! I do love to see the restoration and return to mainline duties of Steam Loco's (I am a massive fan of 4472) or in Tornado's case a rebuilt Steam Loco, but the HST, prototype or not is what I grew up on! This is great news to the children of the late 70's and 80's! Now I'm off to start a future Class 91 group, anyone with me?

The prospect of 41001 being restored is an exciting one. It would be a nice thing to see. The 91 group seems to be a nice idea. I agree it'll be a long time to see the back of them. They are adequate trains, if slightly generic.

I agree with the sentiments here, and count me in on the Class 91 group (Electra Preservation Society anyone?). The practicalities might take a bit of thinking about, although I've now found out that 41001's couplers are compatible with a MkII. Thing is, you might need a turntable.

Turntable would good, but not essental. It working top and tail with another loco would be fine.

Much as I love the HST's I'm not sure there's any point to this restoration. I would much rather see a running HST restored to it's original "Banana" livery.
