Well, a very curious thing happened today...

As you know, it looked like I wouldn't be able to get 90 049 in. The problem was less to do with leaving work early than getting it past the wife; if I'd simply said "I'll be going out for 4½ hours after work!" the answer would have probably been a stinging headache.

But...

Early afternoon, someone with the gen confirming 90 049 rang my home with an urgent message that one of my two 90s was running tonight. My wife immediately rang this message through to my line manager at work asking if I wanted to go for it.

Well, ask a silly question.....

And so it was that I got off work an hour early as soon as I'd finished the last time specific function of the day, dashed home, deposited briefcase, collected railway stuff, dashed out and bought a ticket to Milton Keynes and back.

And the wife thinks it was her idea that I should go for it!

Weird how things work out isn't it? Anyway... I still need 90 043 for haulage...


TomJ93; it was late because departure from Euston was badly affected by the late departure of the two 390s immediately in front of 1K39. One was observed leaving at our scheduled time, we left a minute later but ran very slowly and came to a halt half way up Camden bank where the second one came past us; we were 10 down by the time we got going again.

There was a further slight delay caused by what seemed to be a pw slack at around milepost 38.

90049 did a stella job, just a shame it got delayed including at Smethwick for a Signal fault which was being rectified as we passed a signal at danger. The CDL also mysteriously locked and unlocked enroute while the train was in motion as the Door Unlock light kept lighting up and going off.

All trains from Birmingham to Wolverhampton experienced similar delays at around that time, and for the previous hour or two.

And the Pendo that left Euston 20 minutes earlier only got to Wolverhamton 7 minutes earlier.

There seemed to be plenty of 90veg on various platforms- were there many on board P?

In case anyone didn't hear about it, the stock later worked back in passenger service from Crewe to Watford ( terminated at 01.09 ) as 1M16 after 390 011 got broken when it hit a flock of sheep that strayed onto the line a few miles north of Crewe; several broken windows and some underside damage sustained.

90 049 had already been detached before this incident so the working to Watford was hauled by a 57, but I don't know which one yet.

Obvious question is whether with this 390 broken will WB64 be out a bit more in the next few days?

Hope everyone on 390011 is alright, although I'm sure they are. Ahh, a 57 on WB64? These passengers were lucky, I suppose quite a lot of people would love to have a ride behind a 57 on WB64, I know I would! Well, even though I don't have any information, I would expect WB64 to cover on its usual Birmingham diagram for this set. If the set is out longer than a month I would expect 390054 to then come into traffic with the May timetable change as is rumoured and render WB64 surplus to requirements apart from its Friday's only turn to Crewe.

390011 was on 1M19, 1M16 is the up Caledonian Sleeper. The Ronnie was 308

It probably was just not on view to passing trains. It was used on Sunday for a foot-ex from Stoke with ECS from Wembley

Word is 90041 as its on maintenance at the moment at LNWR. Usually whatever is on maintenance during the weekend/beginning of the week if its a bank holiday the previous weekend, has gone on WB64. Certainly been the case for the last few weeks

I was travelling from London to Birmingham on the 10.30 pendolino to Euston arriving at 12.27. The train (coming from Wolverhampton) broke down at the platform and we were all told to disembark and await a new train that was being fetched.

To my disapointment it wasn't the pretendilino but after leaving 50 mins late, arrival into euston was only 12 mins.. Surely timetable don't have THAT much recovery time in them... do they?

Looking at the timetables shows me that you were travelling on a Sunday.

Journey times can be extended on Sundays to take into account possible diversions for engineering works (ie via Northampton on the WCML).

Normally the 10:30 ex New St is due to arrive into Euston at 11:54 Mon - Sat.

Yes it was a sunday! Diversions... of course!! That slipped my mind but does explain a lot!
