I'm led to believe that the average time in circulation for a £5 note is three weeks, so I'd expect them to be everywhere quite quickly

Three weeks is surely quite poor, particularly since I doubt that the average £5 note gets back to a bank within three weeks of entering circulation. As soon as they go into a till, they come straight back out in another customer's change. On the other hand, a £20 note will most likely leave a bank/ATM, be spent in a shop, and go straight back to the bank.

A quick search, and I've come up with estimates of between 1-2 years for the average paper fiver which seems a bit more believable (although obviously this varies quite significantly - some new notes may well only last three weeks if they're handled poorly, and even just a few years ago I came across an old George Stephenson fiver in circulation that was allegedly withdrawn back in 2003!). Seems a bit more believable, but it does mean that the old fivers will need to be replaced faster than their usual lifecycle would allow.

They will be auctioning AA01 000017 which they say is the lowest numbered new plastic £5 banknote that is available to the public.

Yes, as the old fivers cease to be legal tender in May 2017 - but obviously they won't have been releasing many paper ones for some time now ahead of last month's launch of the plastic one in any case.

There is at least one cash machine at London Charing Cross which has £5 notes, which is how I got my first one . I really like the design, but I wonder how long until the novelty wears off for me .

A DLR TVM accepted mine yesterday on the first attempt, so at least some railway TVMs are compatible with them.

^ Perhaps the same people who launder their money? (I mean in a washing machine of course!). Plenty of people put banknotes through the wash by leaving them in their pocket. It would therefore follow that a reasonable proportion of these would subsequently be ironed, albeit the note will probably not be in direct contact with the plate of the iron so may not be likely to reach temperatures hot enough to melt.

I have put many a fiver through the wash. I have a tumble drier and I typically find my laundered cash when ironing or wearing and randomly finding one in my pocket.

Reports are that they do not make it through the tumble drier.

I had my first two plastic fivers this week, at least the first two English plastic fivers. They're good. I honestly think the size of the new notes is much better too.
