Sounds like a rather expensive experiment. 727s aren't exactly cheap pieces of machinery; they're passenger-carrying aircraft!

Still, sounds like an interesting watch.

You can buy a (used) 727 for five million pounds. Still, it's only a short haul aircraft, and they're in limited service these days. An A380 would set you back about $250 million!

The 727 was heavily produced into the 1970s; the last 727 was completed in 1984.

The only companies really using it today are FedEx, and other logistical businesses.

Did they ever do (or consider) creating a documentary about the Air France aircraft that crashed into the Atlantic?

I seem to remember that the plane suffered a failure, and the pilots pointed the nose of the aircraft upwards, when they should have pointed it down to get wind across the plane.

Yes there is a documentary about that. It's available on 4OD or Demand 5, its one of the two I'll have a look later and confirm, unless anyone can quicker than me. I won't ruin it to much for you but it seems that a mismanaged stall was what happened in that particular case.

Yes, the least experienced member of staff was in control of the aircraft at that time and it was claimed that the captain, after returning from his break, did not realise that the aircraft was in the nose-up position until it was too late. It is well worth watching.

Yep, and of course if Air Crash programs are your thing, then you may want to give Monday 9pm on Nat Geo a watch, as we're about half way through the new series.

It will make for a last few moments of life! If we are all doomed they won't mind anyone using a camera to take a few shots of the inside of the 727 moments before it hits the desert and sending said pictures to the BBC

Regarding adverts, if you are running Google Chrome then just do as Eagle says. Go onto the Chrome store and download yourself the Ad Block. It's free of charge. I don't know if similar software exists for IE and Safari, though considering that the amount of adverts have exploded these days (particuarly on YouTube) it is a very useful widget to have.

Not really, at the end they showed a cross section of the plane and illustrated the G-Forces that would have been felt on impact from front to back and anywhere behind the split suffered considerably less G-Force than those right at the front and have a much greater chance of survival barring head injuries etc.

It does appear from the experiment that if the front landing gear was designed the sheer off like the rear sets, then the plane is less likely to dig in and create enough force to rip the body.

Just finished watching the documentary about the Air France aircraft that crashed into the Atlantic. Such a sad story, but it was interesting to learn more about the physics and the communications in air travel.
