Based on the success of Buckshaw Park near Chorley this has to be seen as a good idea although personally I would prefer a more geographically correct station name than “Anywhere Parkway” or perhaps some reference to the former Radio Mast site – any suggestions?

In this case a new name would save the expense of having to rename Rugby as “Rugby not the Parkway”

Local papers have picked up on the Council's press release.
A new rail station near DIRFT has been given the green light by Warwickshire County Council.
Warwickshire councillors have voted in favour of building the Rugby Parkway Station on the A428-Crick Road, on land between DIRFT and the existing housing at Hillmorton...

...Rugby Parkway Station will be located on the Northampton Loop of the West Coast Main Line and it is hoped it will be used by commuters to DIRFT and by mast site residents to get into Rugby town centre....

I thought that the old BR found the right recipe for naming such stations when it opened Haddenham and Thame Parkway, which encompassed both the name of the place in which it was located and the larger nearby settlement it aimed to serve. That's why I was slightly disappointed to see Chiltern totally overlook Kidlington when naming Oxford Parkway. (Warwick Parkway is a slightly different case as the nearest settlement of any size is of course Warwick).

Using this convention would give Hillmorton and Rugby Parkway for the new station. I think that's sufficiently different to the existing Rugby station to avoid any need to rename it.

I'd rather that one had kept its old name of Euxton ROF. FWIW, it's a shame the old station, which was in remarkably good condition for being abandoned, couldn't have been re-used, or the new one built in the wartime style.

Car parking for 260 cars?

Mmm, anyone else spot the shortest planning horizon??

They also smuggled through novel titles as in Alfreton and Mansfield Parkway.

Agree Hillmorton would be a more sensible name.

Why do so many new stations have to be "Parkway" nowadays?

It basically implies "not in the place concerned, but has a big car park", and is quite well known as such.

Then again...would you go on to rename? Would you, for instance, want "South Bucks Parkway" instead of "Tring"? (It isn't even in the town).

Alfreton and Mansfield Parkway was a name I never really understood as the station was some distance from Mansfield and for a large part of the town Chesterfield was the closest station plus going Mansfield to/from Alfreton on the A38 is a challenge in itself.

Yeah, looking at a map I'm not quite sure why you wouldn't just go to Chesterfield.

Wasn't it "Alfreton Mansfield Parkway" without the "and"?

It was a PR move as Mansfield, at the time, was well known as the largest town in the country without a railway station.

I preferred the older system of "xx Junction" meaning "flipping miles from xx"

Definitely with an "and".

The one I never quite understood was Port Talbot Parkway - close to the centre of town and not an especially large car park.

Sounds far more descriptive.

I wouldn't go for 260 car park spaces as being "big" though. Tring 500, Leighton Buzzard 667, Northampton 700.

True, but LBZ and NMP have substantial demand from the town surrounding them, whereas the hamlet of Tring Station doesn't really have many commuters (nor indeed inhabitants of any kind)! :)

A lot of demand I believe comes from the Aylesbury area due to the superior level of service on the WCML.

Didcot Parkway is another, but I'm not familiar with the local history of those parts so perhaps it made more sense when the Parkway part of the name was first applied.

Dicot Parkway is simply a Parkway station for the wider area for people traveling elsewhere, that happens to be in Didcot. It is not really a park and ride for Didcot.

Just like Southampton Parkway isn't really there for getting to Southampton. It's to feed outgoing passengers into the rail network from the M27 corridor. It's really a London Park and Ride...

That's what I mean though: if I was required to travel to Didcot, the station being called Didcot Parkway would make me think I'd also have to think about getting from the station to the town itself (see also Tiverton Parkway, which is used as a railhead not just for Tiverton but also Barnstaple and most of Exmoor).

You'd be crazy to drive to the station in LBZ, get a bike, or walk for a bit -- it's 1.8 miles from Gibson Drive on the far side of town and I believe there was a bus. The entire of Linslade is less than a mile, the average LBZ resident must be within a mile of the station.

That really leaves people from Wing, Hockliffe and Heath and Reach.

Following the Warwick Parkway model.

Build a car park.

Extend it.

Extend it again.

And then a bit more.

And then on t'other side of road ....

Not sure it will attract lots of people going to Rugby. 4 mins. ride to Rugby station - then another 10 minutes uphill walk to the town centre.

More likely to attract people going to Northampton, Milton Keynes & London, I suspect.

Didcot Town Council has repeatedly called for the 'Parkway' suffix to be dropped from the station name for just that reason without success.

My rule of thumb would be that in the absence of a separate station called Didcot, or Didcot Central, or some other alternative, then the station would not be of the 'park and ride for incoming passengers' type.

260 spaces feels too small. Do they have access to expand it or have funds to build a multi storey?

It still isnt off the back of a fag packet yet, nor in a GRIP stage, nor has it got confirmed new station funding as I said up thread. They could quite easily decide to build a bigger car park.

Indeed- which is why non-locals would assume that the 'Parkway' suffix suggested it would be quite a distance from the town of Didcot itself: much like Tiverton Parkway. Incidentally, those at the Eastern extremity of Exmoor tend to drive into Taunton rather than to Tiverton and aren't put off by the lack of a suffix on the station name.

I also think that Kidlington Parkway or Kidlington Oxford Parkway would be a better name for the new station at Water Eaton.
