I'll be taking the Night Riviera next month from London to Plymouth as part of an ALR. Just wondering are there Priv Fares available for the berths?

I was only looking into this subject the other day for a colleague. In essence Yes, you want a Sleeper Solo Open which is around £27.50 at PRIV rate. I believe This is cheaper than the berth supplement.

Be warned however that my colleague had great difficulty buying the above tickets. 5 different clerks at 3 different offices all quoted different prices with some saying no priv discount, some saying it wasn't the full 75% etc.

Any problems, tell them to look at fares manual.

You will want a Sleeper Twin Open, which would be around £43. This is for a twin room, and from what I can understand, the fare is per berth not per person.

Just a slight correction, a 'berth' is for 1 person as that refers to the bed. A 'cabin' is 2 berths. So £43 would be the price for the cabin. (For groups of 4 you can get inter-connecting cabins)

Certainly seems more of a bargain then Scotrail! Any idea of priv for the Scottish service?

A check of Avantix provides a London Terminals - Penzance PRIV price for one person occupying a berth. Singles only. Booked train only.

If you work for scotrail, you get the sleeper for free altogether. I think priv for others is fill out a box and pay the berth supplement. Though i'm sure I will stand corrected.

I work for FCC so free use isn't applicable but I do get the First travelcard, would I be able to fill out a box and just pay the berth supplement or is it more a case of get the tickets beforehand?

Also just wondering, does Scotrail managed to sellout the sleepers on every trip or are there berths still possible to use?

Not sure ajax, does it say on the back of your card? The sleeper is certainly exempt from the friends and family deal. It's always pretty busy when I travel on it, seated section is usually full anyway, I think the berths tend to be quieter during the week though.

It just says it's valid on all First services with nothing on the restrictions.

I tend to travel back to London on Monday nights mainly from Edinburgh but not that often say once every so couple of months.

I did ask one of the attendants before if there were any chance of upgrading and I was willing to pay the excess but was told it was busy.

The Sleeper Solo Open is just a single though isn't it? It's just myself and a colleague are thinking of a trip to Penzance and I'm looking at the fares.

:cry: Yes this the correct info. according to FRPP, however the quota of these appears very limited IME (or booking clerks struggle to find them). Have also found FGW telesales seem able to find availablity of Sleeper Advance (the only difference to above being non-Refundable) for Night Riv. which major station BO could not !
The original poster using ALR will prob. find it easiest to pay public berth supplements for trip - Note being turfed out at PLY at early hour as no portion detached any longer ! (could double back from Bodmin/Truro for extra kip)

Thanks for all the help. What is the latest the berth can be booked? I would be planning to book the day before travel.

I've 'booked' a berth on the train. The deadline is simply whenever they're sold out!! (If you want the Friday of a bank holiday weekend at the start of the school holidays then it'll be a few weeks before, but if it's a wednesday night in December then you would have no probs on the day)

When I paid on board, I was told by the berth attendant standard berths had sold out, and that I'd have to pay extra for FC. The guard was really friendly though, and let us pay the standard price (otherwise if they had insisted on the FC price I think we'd have gone back to seated!) this was in 2007 and I hear that SC/FC are now abolished and you pay for solo or shared.

Quite right. There is no difference between the two except you get a berth to yourself and a nice little toiletry pack.

The Riveira is an oddity
You can travel on a Standard ticket and book a single berth!
Given how little extra the single berth is, if I was travelling on a Standard ticket I suggest that is what you book

Last year I was booking a berth using my First Class ALR
The agent at Glasgow Central couldn't find "first class sleeper berth"
I stayed quiet for a few minutes, then suggested they compared to trying to book two people in, and it didn't work, "hmm that must be first class then"
The ticket then printed as a single berth

So lesson learnt, ask for "single berth"

Solo Sleeper berths all have Volo TV. No additional costs, unlike Volo fitted to day trains.
