GENERAL INFORMATION

During December a large number of errors were made, with invalid moves being posted on numerous occasions. Consequently, no fewer than eight legs were void and scored nil points. Cumulatively these legs would have been worth 387 points.

The most common error seems to involve routes which only see a very limited service and are marked accordingly on maps. Whilst maps can be useful in following where we are on a leg, they are not to be relied upon as the sole source of information. Before posting, timetables should always be consulted to check the move is valid.

There are parts of the UK rail network where it is not possible to travel directly from one station to the next, and skip-stopping patterns are common. Routes which are marked on maps as seeing a very limited service often have trains in one direction only. It is not just the Stockport to Stalybridge line's famous Parliamentary that only runs in one direction; around the country there are any number of chords that only have services one way. This will not show up on a map.

A number of posters use Realtime Trains as a source, as do I. It is a fantastically useful resource, but there are a few pitfalls to be aware of, primarily trains which are marked as either STP or VAR schedules. These are frequently one-off timetables because of engineering works, and are to be treated with extreme caution for our purposes: always look for schedules marked as WTT to be on the safe side.

All contestants need to be a little bit more cautious about not just their own posts but also of those who have gone before. Errors are inevitable, and even the most experienced of players will make the odd mistake occasionally, which is why the vigilance of fellow players is important. Once a leg has ended, and victory claimed, any undetected error will result in that leg being void and worth zero points. (Because I do check everything when I'm updating the scores! ;) )
