Why the penalty at Barry Island?
An extract from the rules:
6a. End of the Line: When at the 3rd station from an end point, if the 2nd station is not posted within 3 hours, then 20 points are taken from the leg total.
If no posts are received over 6 hours, another 20 points are taken from the leg total. This ruling will not apply in the time period of 0001 and 0900 inclusive.
Had Barry Island been played, that would have meant that Rhoose Cardiff International Airport was the 3rd station from the end point. As there was a gap of just over three hours before Barry was played, this would have resulted in a 20 point (

) deduction. (A six hour gap between the antepenultimate and penultimate postings would be needed for a 40 point deduction.) However, as the leg has since continued rather than ending at Barry Island, the penalty is not incurred.
The rule was introduced to encourage players to act fairly at the end of a leg and post the penultimate station, rather than waiting for someone else to fall on their sword first.
