I'm not sure this is valid - looking at the Scotrail website, it shows sleepers from Edinburgh not stopping at Preston. The ones that stop at Preston aren't shown to stop at Edinburgh. NRE website shows it has to be a change at Falkirk.

If I've missed a daytime service that runs Edinburgh - Preston non-stop, then I apologise.

The sleeper from Fort William stops at Edinburgh and Preston. It is set down only at Edinburgh but I can't find anything in the rules saying that it's not allowed as if you were already on the train when it stopped at Edinburgh, the next station would be Preston.
