Unfortunately I was using wikipedia rail maps and the only other line from Accrington was shown as closed. I also didn't immediately realize that the line beyond Colne was closed.

Ah, you fell into the trap. Trains to Burnley Manchester Road branch off just after Rose Grove, but are all fast Accrington-Burnley.
