I’d lean towards saying that starting at KX would not do—the ECML is distinguished only by its service patterns, and not by significant technical aspects.
Euston on the other hand….to what extent is the Watford DC its own thing, as opposed to being another set of slows of the WCML?
A further point of pedantry may exist in that VIC is itself separated into Central/SE sections, but differentiation on the Chiltern route does not exist until Neasden Jn—well outside Marylebone, but before any other stations.
Crossrail will soon pose another question—to what extent are Paddington/Liv St LL their own thing, as opposed to being part of the eponymous main line termini? (cf. St Pancras)

The above is an extract from the rules. My understanding of this rule is that the first station has to be on a different line totally from the other, not just having platforms on one route only. In my view the following London terminals cannot be used as starting points:
Waterloo
Charing Cross
Cannon Street
Fenchurch Street
Liverpool Street
Moorgate
Kings Cross
Euston

The following I consider to be allowable:
Marylebone (Wembley Stadium/Harrow-on-the-Hill)
Paddington (Acton Main Line/South Ruislip)
This was the decision made before with regards to the validity of London Terminal stations five years ago, before I was an adjudicator. Questions were raised with regards to validity of Liverpool Street that weren't resolved, I would say it was valid.

A decision will be made with regards to the Crossrail station closer to opening when the situation is more clear, but a reminder that St Pancras Thameslink is counted the same as the whole of the main station.
