I suppose that I assumed there was no way back except through Edge Hill....like Seamer and Scarborough...but was I was wrong?.

Difference is I don't think there's any train back from Scarborough that doesn't stop at Seamer - but plenty back out from Liverpool Lime St that don't call Edge Hill that are still possible. The rules allow you to pass back through stations, but you can't stop at the same station again.
In any case, though, Merseyrail is valid as well, giving another option from here.
