With regard to this, I would point out rule 8 and, again, rule 9:

8. IN THE EVENT OF A WRONG ANSWER:

If a submission to the quiz is incorrect, but there have been no further posts, the author may edit their post, so long as the original is shown as crossed out. After striking through an incorrect entry, you must use reply rather than edit to post your new entry. This aims to prevent confusion to allow for smooth proceedings.

If there have been further posts, either of two circumstances should occur;
i) The author states their position, thus making any posts after the original superfluous. The original incorrect answer should be crossed out. The game is then continued by a different individual, starting from the station before the incorrect submission.
ii) Another individual states their suspicion, which is then confirmed by another player. Anyone is then welcome to continue the game, again starting from the station before the incorrect submission. Again, the incorrect answer should be crossed out.

If you are unable to cross the answer out, due to reasons beyond your control, you should only edit to a statement giving an acceptable reason. You should not make another posting until another person has posted.

If the post is edited, then it will be assumed that the entry has been changed, unless a clear reason is posted in the reason box.

9. Any entry that has been edited or deleted without good reason will lose 25 points from that leg.

Duplicate posts (Castle Cary...and Castle Cary) are not affected by this rule.

If a submission has been posted by an author, which was seen as incorrect and crossed out having been superseded by an earlier post, but was then discovered to be correct, will make all submissions following it superfluous. The game shall restart from the submission which superseded the submission.

May I make a suggestion for a rules alteration? I realise that we cannot enforce it right now, but I'd like to see how people feel on this issue.

How about this rules change:

9. Any entry that has been edited or deleted without good reason will lose 25 points from that leg - but only if the offending user themselves wins the leg.

Speaking as a former Senior Adjudicator of more than four years standing on this quiz who actually remembers the events that led up to every rule change that has ever occurred on this quiz, let me state here and now that the reason why this particular rule was worded in the way it was is the fact that at that time, there were many rules infringements to Rule 8 and it was decided that a "blanket punishment" would be the best method of dealing with the matter which should concentrate the mind of such offenders that other contestants could suffer as a result of such indiscretions.

Again, I remind everyone of the fact that our official scorer clagmonster has to face such matters as part of his scoring.

In response to that I think that there is a side to an 'offenders-only' rule that is quite important: as they have no chance of winning the next leg, they cannot participate for any gain until it is over and, as such, learn from their mistake.

I know what you say, but you do have to admit that it is becoming tiresome for very experienced contestants who have a deep knowledge of the quiz rules to keep posting rules extracts that cover incorrectly made postings, only to find that what is said in Biblical term references..."And some fell on stony ground"...

I concur with Paul's comments above as, perhaps, it will allow other players as well as adjudicators to spot such discretions. Furthermore, some of us enjoy playing the game for the game's sake at times and not for the points won.

Don't get me wrong, I also enjoy playing the game just to play the game, but there are others who we have experienced who care solely for points and will edit posts to get them. This would dissuade them, but as you say it could do more harm than good.
