Without starting a separate thread... does anyone know whether the RVEL 73/9s have any sort of multiple working equipment?

They are fitted with AAR sockets

With 31 233 having problems and 31 285 left sitting in a siding at Exeter Yard, Over the next 12 months the 73/9's could be seeing more action on test trains, and eventually will become a regular occurrence :)

31285 leaves Exeter Riverside by road on Wed. The RVEL 73/9's will replace the 31s on test trains later this year. The GBrf 73/9's will appear on test trains once they are sorted and test train drivers trained

Every picture I have seen of them (ok, of 73952) shows nothing like a multiple working cable or socket

Have a look at this ---> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_American_Railroads

The AAR sockets on the RVEL 73/9s is located next to the buffers, on the left of the left buffer at one end and on the right of the left buffer beside the buckeye at the other end! Awkward place to put them.

Are the NR DVTs fitted with AAR or still using TDM?

They've been working with 67s... so i assume AAR

But ISTR reading that the DB Regio/Chiltern DVTs still retain their TDM, in addition to the AAR

Sorry I'm answering my own question now, but yes the NR DVTs do have AAR as the 67s TDM system is limited from what I can remember and not suitable for proper push-pull mode as it was originally for the mail trains for limited shunting only IIRC? So if the NR DVTs are working with the 67s then they MUST have AAR meaning that the RVEL 73/9s (and the GBRF 73/9s) will be able to work the DVTs, and I'm guessing the NR DBSOs are blue-star modified like the DRS DBSOs as they regularly work with the 31s and 37s.

I've seen plenty of mentions that the NR DVTs have been working with the67s using AAR Rather than TDM... but i've not seen anything to confirm or deny the actual mode of operation

I don't think that 67s can actually operate TDM for push-pull, but I'm open to correction?

The NR DVTs operate with class 67 using AAR

I'm not aware of any TDM capability, what they had was PACS (propelling advisory control system) which allowed them to work with the Royal Mail NAA's via the RCH cables as described by big jim in the following RMWeb post

PACS displays in the cabs (propelling advisory control system) which is basically a box with a series of lights that, as the driver/shunter in the PCV opened the "power" control the driver in the loco could see on the display how much power was needed (iirc its 5 lights on the display) and adjusted the throttle to suit, the PCV driver then operated the brake as they required, it all worked through the RCH cables through the train

Correct. I'm not aware of any TDM fitted to the Chiltern 67s - They were modified to run with AAR, one of the reasons for this being down to the remote fire suppression control from DVT to 67 & vice versa. Steering back to topic, I believe that the GBRf examples will be AAR fitted anyway to allow multi working between itself and a 66 as well as 73/9.

Theres a GBRf light engine (0Y73) from Crewe IEMD to Tonbridge tomorrow afternoon (1159 from Crewe IEMD) http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/O14688/2015/07/29/advanced
Nothing on RTT for the out and back test run to Warrington.

Was great to get 73963 and 73961 through Tamworth on 0Z73 earlier on :p https://www.flickr.com/photos/sboothby/19476595243/in/dateposted-friend/

It is an AAR socket. The GB 73/9s are well spec'd for compatibility with other stock. IIRC they can work with class 73/1 and 73/2 (I also suspect with 73/0) class 66s (but could perhaps be any AAR fitted loco), other GB 73/9s, southern region multi fitted stock ie. Mk1 de icer vans (and again should in theory work with other SR Mk1 stock and perhaps class 33s)

I'd be interested to know if the AAR multi has actually been tested with a 66

This got me wondering what will the preferred method of MW within the 73/9 subclass, I'm guessing the AAR as it's probably the most user friendly/quickest way to multiple?
