...a bit on the young side. (or at least looks it) He's 29 and Scottish.

I'm a little surprised by the casting but maybe its another attempt at bringing Dr Who to the masses.

IMDB page link HERE
Ncuti Gatwa is an actor, known for Sex Education (2019), Doctor Who (2005) and The Last Letter from Your Lover (2021)....

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-61371123
Actor Ncuti Gatwa will take over from Jodie Whittaker as the star of Doctor Who, the BBC has announced.

The 29-year-old will become the 14th Time Lord on the popular science fiction show, and the first person of colour to play the lead role.

I think Matt Smith was around that age when he took over?

He was 26. (I had to google it) and I think it worked. I really liked him as a The Doctor the relationships with his companions has been one of the best. I hope this new Doctor has a decent companion(s) they are what often make/break a good Doctor.

No more Cybermen/Dalek yawnfests. Even the Weeping Angels have gotten a little tedious

I’ve never really understood the appeal of the programme if I’m honest! I don’t get why casting the new “Doctor” is a big deal.

Hopefully the writing will be better this time around. Both Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker had some truly awful material to work with, despite being great actors.

I think it was the Angels in Manhattan episode where (spoilers) the Statue of Liberty is a Weeping Angel, and the whole family just laughed their heads off at it when it appeared. It was an absolutely ridiculous concept and badly executed.

Daily Mail commentators frothing at the mouth about this. How dare a fictional alien time traveller not be a certain colour?

I recall the original long running version of Dr Who as a child in the 1980s with Colin Baker then Sylvester McCoy and I have never warmed to the series. Its almost like 'Marmite' - you either love it or hate it.

After all the hype with the show's relaunch in 2005 when one series wonder Chris Eccleston played the Dr, the Beeb seem to be kicking the backside out of it now as one of their flagship programmes.

Unfortunately, as we now live in the age of CGI, most of the material is based around special effects rather than good acting from the cast.

I reckon, the show is long over due a rest (again) but sadly I have a feeling we will see it continue for the foreseeable future.

I can remember the very first episode where the TARDIS (in the familiar shape of a police callbox) was found in a scrapyard. By current standards, the production was basic but the storyline and overall concept has survived well.
Ever since, there has been both positive and negative views expressed about the programme. There must still be a significant following of the series for it to get schedule time despite whatever the likes of the DM and its followers try to put it down with.
Personally, I think the return of Russell T Davies is the high point here as he certainly has raised the game of the stories from the 2005 relaunch. The role of the lead actor is to draw new audiences in which generally most have done pretty well.

Hopefully the writing will be better this time around. Both Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker had some truly awful material to work with, despite being great actors.

I think this is it in a nutshell. Especially since Jodie Whittaker, we've had obviously badly written stories, stories that don't even seem to make any sense, multiple companions that lack any distinct personality, stories that take no account of Dr. Who history and most depressingly, stories where it's obvious that the writer has prioritised making political points over writing a good and consistent story - all of which must be difficult for any actor to deal with.

Having said that, I'm not sure I'd totally blame the bad writing: Chris Ecclestone, David Tennant and Matt Smith all managed in different ways through their styles, facial expressions, mannerisms, etc. to show very unique and exciting personalities over and above the material that, as far as I could tell, would have been in the script, and several of their companions did likewise - thinking particularly here of Billie Piper and Catherine Tate. I don't think either Jodie Whittaker or any of her companions have managed to do the same thing at all in the current Dr Who setup - the acting has seemed to me very bland - with the one exception of Sacha Dhawan as the Master, who's acted his part very well. I'm not sure why that is - whether they were all inhibited in some way by the writing/production, or whether they just weren't the right actors for those parts?

At any rate, I hope things improve - and Russell T Davies has a good history in that regard, so I'm optimistic now he's back running things.

Is that based on, that you've gone and looked at the Daily Mail comments and been shocked in some way by what was said in the comments?
I was sent a couple of screen shots by a friend. The comments were silly and small minded but not unexpected. I don't understand how someone can be so angry or scared of a gay black immigrant fella playing a fictional alien TV character! It was the same when they appointed a bird to the role.

Surely the main issue is the writing and presentation of the stories hasn't been very good recently.

As mentioned above, the previous two Doctors were presented with awful writing which in the case of Jodie Whittaker was a huge missed opportunity given she was the first female Doctor. I'll do what I always do and give it a watch then decide. I've not seen Ncuti Gatwa in anything other than Sex Education so don't know him as any other character other than Eric

It's not really difficult to imagine what the Mail comments section will be like. You only have to see it once to form a picture.

For balance, it's not just the Mail either. Any online newspaper comments section is generally a cesspit of prejudice and bigotry.

Jeezo, of all the things to defend...

I couldn't care less who plays Dr. Who. Some of us have never got over William Hartnell turning into Patrick Troughton!

Are you saying that you think it's OK to attack whatever the comments might have said without first checking what the comments actually say?

As it happens @DarloRich did reply to say he had seen a screenshot of the comments, which is fair enough.

Actually, I am disgusted by the latest casting for Doctor Who (and in fact all previous castings) as although he/she/it etc is an alien, in every single case they have been played by a human ! But I agree, good luck to anyone taking on the role.

They've all had their share of bad episodes since it came back, I thought Capaldi suffered in his first season with the decision to make him a more unlikeable Doctor, and then in his 2nd by being mid-life crisis Doctor, but his 3rd was a big improvement. The other problem, which maybe had set in before his time, was that after a decade of being on air the plots started to feel a bit "been there, done that", although mostly entertaining enough for that not to become an issue.

Unfortunately, the scripts JW had to work with don't seem to have been as entertaining, not sure why they chose to make her first series something with a fairly low amount of threat and memorable monsters. I watched the Sea Devils one over Easter a couple of times and can't really remember much about it, other than they looked great and there was initially that bit more menace (and less "Man in sheet" make up) than the old series' version, after that it seemed to be a lot of rushing about to distract from the void in the script ... :|

Haha yeah. I thought was quite a decent idea for a story - shame about the script. What really got me when I watched it was:

The army of Sea Devils that seemed to mysteriously appear whenever they were needed for the added threat, but promptly vanish into thin air whenever their presence would disrupt the plot line
The extraordinary ability of that female captain to single-handedly overpower two reasonably fit-and-healthy-looking male stowaways AND tie them both up suspended upside-down by their ankles. I mean, did neither of them try resisting? Or did one of the men just go for a walk or something while she tied the other one up?
The extraordinary good-will of the Sea Devil leader in, having decided he had no use for his human prisoners (The Doctor and Yaz) and may as well kill them, first choosing to give them a tour of his control centre and explain all his plans to them.
The sudden hint of romance between the Doctor and Yaz at the end, which had absolutely no connection or relevance to the plot and just seemed totally gratuitous (and not really in keeping with the Doctor's character either).
[/spoiler...]

Surely DM readers are entitled to an opinion too?

UK was a country of free speech last time I looked ......
Absolutely - not free speech without consequence though.

The consequence here being I can laugh at silly, narrow minded, bigots getting themselves into a puce faced rage over the fact that, checks notes, a gay black immigrant man has been given the role of an alien time traveller on, checks notes again, a TV programme. It is nonsense and some it unpleasant nonsense.

Why would they be so worried/angry about this? What is there to be scared of? What is the threat? What is going to happen to them because of this decision?

He has never confirmed his sexuality. He was Gay in Sex Education but in real life he has been know to have a girlfriend. Its amazing what we all assume isn't it.

for gods sake don't look at the Daily Mail comments section about this!
Why on earth would Daily Mail readers have a problem with this new doctor? Hmm…

(sarcasm)

Away from the ridiculousness of the Daily Fail comments section, from what I’ve read from Doctor Who fans (Whovians?) this latest doctor could help attract more viewers, such as those who liked his other work on Sex Education (a tedious show in my opinion, but it was apparently very popular). And more importantly, the old writers have gone. Apparently the writing when Jodie Whittaker was the Doctor was rather poor.

I don't know of him tbh as I haven't seen sex education. I am sure I read he was gay but stand corrected - thanks for the correction.

I watched it twice. Still made no sense. Having the stars move around in the sky was exceptionally daft.
