The final clue was to have been that it was once the junction for two long closed routes and is still a junction station.

Trivia. In the days of manual signalling because of the LSWR habit of naming signal boxes east and west according to which was nearer to London Fareham East box was at the west end of the station and vice versa the original line to Fareham having been from Eastleigh.
