Clue3: The station has 3 platforms. Formerly 4
Clue4: The station is served by only one TOC

Clue 5:It was opened several decades after other nearby stations on the line, and did not appear in regular timetables until 5 years after opening

The next clue was going to be "Platforms 1 and 2 tend to be used mostly, with platform 3 used on days when there may be additional trains/visitors to a nearby event. Such as yesterday and today".

I don't think NBL type 2s ever visited Newbury !
I can assure you they did. I used to live in Newbury in the early 70's and saw one every day. Apart from Engineer's trains they used to work the twice daily trips from Reading West yard to Newbury and points between. Also to Welford Park
