The answer sought was Newport (Essex), with the other Newports being in Gwent, the East Riding of Yorkshire and on the Isle of Wight.

For educational purposes, one of your Harlingtons is presumably in Middlesex. Where are your other two? I am struggling to think of others.

This station is north of Watford.

Harlington, London - served by Hayes & Harlington station.
Harlington, South Yorkshire - formally served by Harlington Halt on the Dearne Valley.

Likewise, for educational purposes, what on earth was clue 4 driving at? I can only think of Stansted Express you might have been referring to, but there are no Stansted Expresses going north through Newport.

I'm as much in the dark on this one as everyone else. I was trying to think of a station that would only have loco hauled trains post-privatisation.

Tiverton Parkway has surely been served by HSTs in every timetable period since privatisation. I'd be surprised if there was a time when there weren't local units calling too.

I had assumed that HSTs were deemed to be 'loco hauled' trains as they are not what I would consider DMUs as the power units were not underfloor. Furthermore, the power cars always appeared in the diesel locomotive spotters books of my youth rather than the DMU one..

What, then, is the official position we should all take on this? Most of the rest of us, evidently, consider HSTs to not be multiple units, however clagmonster, who currently holds the floor, believes steadfastly that they are...

In this case, it is irrelevent anyway, as Tivvy Parkway fails the clue about services being extended in the future. I shall add that this station is not currently served by HSTs, nor to the best of my knowledge has it ever been. It is plausible they have passed through on diversion, though certainly not recently, and I am sure there has been the odd charter with one passing through.

Some of you may recall that I have, in the past, made a stiuplation about HSTs in a clue when I have predicted that the HST debate would come up, in order to avoid it from doing so. I shall endeavour to do so in future.
