The diversion I had in mind was Cardiff-Manchester being diverted when Crewe-Wilmslow (or I suppose Slade Lane-Piccadilly) being unavailable. In this event, they have been known to be diverted via Warrington to Piccadilly, in some cases calling at Deansgate.
