... It is just a parkway station for the East Midlands ;)
The clue is in the name. "Parkway" is traditionally used for stations so far removed from the geographical location implied that you need a different atlas to find your way.

A tip: Any station with the word "Parkway" in it is nowhere near the place it says it serves.

With the Didcot being the exception as it is actually in Didcot, it's just got a large car park. Also, Port Talbot Parkway is actually in Port Talbot.

I know that :P

Apart from Southampton Airport Parkway which is next to the terminal of the airport it serves!

I'm sure East Midlands Parkway is in the East Midlands. It's not called East Midlands Airport Parkway. It's a Parkway for the East Midlands just as the airport is an airport for the East Midlands.

Meanwhile, back at the topic...

Heard a tale of a guy on the rural Norfolk routes. He was trundling along and came across two old boys having a natter across a foot crossing. The problem was that one of them had a pushbike that was foul of the line. So the driver whistled up and the two old fellas waved and went back to their conversation. The driver then whistles up again a bit more emphatically and gets the same reaction, so he chucks the lot in and comes to a screeching halt short of the crossing. He then opens the window and yells:

"Oi, grandad. Move your f***ing bike!!"

"What's the matter with you? Can't you just steer around it?"

So is it now a Parkway for the airport?

It's now near a junction of the M27 or M3, so it's a station for the Airport and a Parkway station for those who find it easier to drive to an out of town station for a train north than going into Southampton. It is effectively a Southampton Parkway and a Southampton Airport station. The Airport terminal is but a short walk from the platforms.

Slightly off topic, but I have asked a really stupid question. On seeing a road sign on the back of deep hall bar in Lincoln college Oxford which said 'Silverstone, please drive carefully' I asked the question 'Where did you get that from then?'. Ergo, there are stupid questions.:D

Yes I laughed when I saw that sign, especially as I had driven through Silverstone quite recently before going to Deep Hall and noticed the sign missing and thought "I wonder which students took that".

IIRC the replacement sign said "Please drive carefully", but the Deep Hall one said "Please drive slowly" but it has been a number of years since I was last in Deep Hall.

Not really a "stupid" question but somewhat inappropriate. I was working in the B/O at Euston and we had to evacuate the station due to smoke and smoldering in one of the tunnels. The B/O staff were required to go to the top of the escalator (the one that leads up into the mainline concourse). The LFB arrived very quickly and of course more or less took over the station. I was stopping all the passengers but one asked "when was the next train to such and such place". I explained that services had been suspended and said why. The now very irate customer demanded to see the person in charge. When I pointed out that the large gentleman in the white helmet was. The passenger demanded to know " Does he know the times of the trains then?"

Likewise it's been a while for me too, hence I was going from memory as to the actual wording of the sign. I don't think I've been down Deepers since my mate Mic Young stopped running the place as that's how I got in there as I wasn't a student!

East Coast one whilst in First Class

I, to staff with my breakfast: "Can I have a extra slice of toast"

No, but you can have a croissant, sir!

Most silly question I asked was years back:

'How much is the Woolwich Free Ferry?'

Ah!, reminds me of the "Fife Free Press" with "This paper is not free" printed under the banner.

If you are standing by a Liverpool bound train in Nottingham and somebody asks you if this is Liverpool then replying "No, it's Nottingham" or "No, it's a train" then I'm afraid you are being a bit of a dick about things

Not being a "dick" at all. The logical answer to the question that was phrased. If the question had been phrased according to the Queens English "Is this the TRAIN to Liverpool" then the logical answer would be "Yes Sir/Madam".
We have plenty of people, not always drunk, who ask if they're at somewhere, and when you reply no, say "OMG i've missed my stop".

Derby is the best station for EMA as it has a bus link. East Mids Parkway is nearest as the crow flies but good luck getting to the airport from it! It is just a parkway station for the East Midlands ;)

Well, there you go. Now not sure whether it was supposed to be a stupid question or a stupid answer...

I boarded the Newquqy train at Par, and a lady asks the Guard ''Could you please turn the engines off - I've got a splitting headache''
Guard replies ''I don't know how we are going to get to Newquay without the engines!!

Another occasion an old dear sitting near the front, asked the Guard how the driver managed to stay on the track, as there were just 2 narrow rails!
The Guard said it was not easy, and pointed to the big metal wheel by the driver!!

(I've been told that a seemingly stupid question most asked at Disneyland Florida is 'what time is the 3 o'clock Parade!!'
The answer they are really looking for is eg 'It passes this point at 3.25, best place to view is...' )

I don't believe that one, everyone knows that nobody but ranting enthusiasts notices DMU engines, let alone finds them annoying.

That's not a stupid question at all - the questioner may not have known that there was such a station, and even if they did there's nothing in the station's name to tell you it's near the airport. It could just be a parkway station for the East Midlands.

The point was the subtle response to the, harsh on the eardrums term, "Train Station", with "Plane Station".
I should at this point clarify that these directions were given when there was a shuttle bus in operation between the airport and East Mid's P'way, and so Derby would not have been the best choice at that time.

She probably meant whilst we were stopped in the station (Par)!
There was about 20 minutes before departure.
Those 1st generation units used to rattle somewhat! If they turned them off sods law they had a flat battery!

I was in my orange at Euston Station one night this week and a drunk guy came up to me (at 0030) and asked what platform the 2330 to Hemel Hempstead was leaving from.
I just said go and check the time boards...

One of my favourites:

Pax: Excuse me, *pointing to departure board* does that train stop at Chichester?

Me: Yes

Pax: Do I need to get off the train at all?

Me: Yes, when it gets to Chichester!

Passenger comes up the escalator at St Pancras, to the EMT concourse.
'Do I get a taxi from here?'.
Before anyone says it, I know the rank used to be behind the Booking Office, but it hasn't been for years.

Ah, so they should have said "railway station" and "sky station", being where the media used for travel by trains and aeroplanes respectively are static. You can hop on the bus at the adjacent road station. ;)

<D I've done the old ' about 8 coaches ' when someone's asked me how long the train will be. Hehe

There was a case in the North East a few years back where a lady asked "how long will the next train be?".

Thinking she wanted to know where best to stand he answered "four coaches".

She walked off. Five minutes later she returned with husband/partner, who proceeded to punch the staff member.

Not a stupid question, but a stupid action. In the early days of AHBs (Automatic Half Barriers) the Milk Race (British cycle race) was approaching one of these new-fangled contraptions when the lights started flashing and the barriers came down. The Police motorcyclist leading the race parked his bike, walked onto the centre of the crossing, held up his arms as though at a road junction and waved the cyclists through.
