Please visit www.themoorlander.co.uk and click on the Digital edition tab. There you will find a third party paywall within which you can download any issue of The Moorlander published over the last two years INCLUDING the OKEHAMPTON RAIL SPECIAL. Unfortunately the host of this service sets a minimum transaction of 50p so even though our 8pp special edition is only 30p when purchased through newsagents, I'm afraid you will have to pay 50p to download this issue.

If you live outside the Dartmoor area but would like to purchase a printed copy then please email e.partridge@themoorlander.co.uk with your address, the cost including postage is £1.70 due to the hefty Royal Mail charges which we can take remotely. With our team operating from home at the moment due to the pandemic please bear with us if our office number 01837 357007 is not answered immediately although it is diverted.

Thanks to everyone for their interest, we are passionate about the reinstatement of the Okehampton to Exeter service and have been lending our support to the various campaign groups over the last few years and are delighted that this news is now a reality.

Moorland special rail supplement 08/12/2020


The current edition of the Moorlander newspaper includes a special rail supplement commemorating the government's commitment to reinstating an Okehampton - Exeter rail service, as reported in the previous news item. Entitled 'The Railway's Coming Home', it contains lots of excellent coverage, including contributions from several DRSA members. If you can't get hold of a copy to keep as a souvenir, you can read it here.

With everyone from GWR, NR, Devon CC, MP's and councillors acting as if this is a fait accompli, it would appear that the answer to my question that started this thread is, yes, the public announcement of funding does come many months after the actual decision. If no funding is provided, then a lot of people in the various organisations above are going to be very angry indeed. It was even revealed in another thread that Bicester to Bletchley hasn't had the funding package yet, at least not publicly. We all know the DfT are incompetent but, their lack of (public) interest in these things is ridiculous. If nothing else, they are denying the Ministers the sort of self-glorifying soundbite announcement they love so much.

Just had a flick through it and it does seem encouraging.

What struck me was not only the level of enthusiasm for the likely re-opening from a publication that (as far as I know) isn't a rail-dedicated one, but the awareness of the need to continue campaigning to ensure the service level is good and attractive, and the awareness of issues like decent journey times, a regular hourly timetable, interchange with buses, accessibility via park-and-ride to motorists (not something I'd normally think much about but obviously important in such a rural area).

Not a lot new other than the official NR statement from Mike Gallop stating that the line reopens with a 2 hourly service in 2021.
