The Manchester Pullman

Anyone remember this? I used to see it often, and travelled on it a few times. It was a short rake of Mk2-based Pullman coaches finished in light grey with (I think) dark grey window surrounds. It was usually hauled by an 86 and called at Wilmslow only on its fast service to Euston (I only caught it at Wilmslow, and I presume it was a Wilmslow-only stopper as it often routed via the Styal line).

Does anyone know the journey time of the train? Presumably it was quick, due to it's being a short rake and therefore light.

They were quite unique, but based on the Mk2d coach with some of the features of the Mk2e
Unlike other other coaches they had smaller doors

Following electrification the power cars were destroyed and served Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston, from 1968

Due to their ETH index they can only be hauled by an AC electric loco, which restricted their use across the BR network, and saw them put into charter use from 1985
The set was repainted into InterCity Executive livery

Only seven of the coaches now remain in service

I think you are confusing the Manchester Pullman with the Midland Pullman.

The Midland Pullman (which never ran on WCML, but ran as you say to St Pancras via Cheadle Heath) pre-dated Mk2 coaches by many years, and was a unique design in a blue livery with white window surrounds and a diesel electric power car (with passenger accommodation) on each end. Some sets ran on WR, and after electrification of WCML in the late 1960s all sets ended up on WR before being scrapped - power cars and coaches.

The Manchester Pullman was loco-hauled stock based on the Mk2 coach, and only ran between Mancheser and Euston on WCML via Wilmslow. I understand the coaches still exist as a charter rake. It was vacuum braked so was an 86 turn (87s being air brakes only).

The coaches were restricted to AC electric due to their ETH index
With the introduction of the Mk3 International Train, the coaches were temporarily stored, until their transfer to the Charter Train Unit
As part of this transfer were some minor modifications (and air brakes as far as I am aware), resulting in the set being relaunched as the Lakeland Pullman
