When BR withdrew and replaced it's locos, not every class of such could be represented in preservation. Most notably - arguably- were the Peppercorn A1 Pacifics which of course live on in the form of Tornado.

What classes of these extinct locos do you wish examples, or specific locos, could've been preserved? This includes Steam, Diesel and Electric.

The LMS twins 1000 and sister 10001 were the first mainline diesel locos for passenger service. They should've had their pride of place at the NRM, but were scrapped by BR - I believe - before they had the chance.

Another LMS diesel, no. 1831, was the experimental LMS shunter. They later provided a basis of sorts for the LMS Built BR Class 11s and the 08s. She was scrapped in the 50s.

There are no more BR Standard Class 6 'Clan Class' locos left either. They were the 'Britannia-lite' and I think they were a common sight around Scotland on semi-fasts. Thankfully, a Tornado-styled project is underway to revive the Clan. Once complete, no. 72010 'Hengist' will become the 1000th loco built to BR Standard designs. Still, such a shame none of the originals survived.

interesting, have you got any links to the project you refer?

Arnt the people who did tornado started another one? forgot what it is. and theres baby deltic too....

I think i'd like some of the older engines to be rebuilt the original engines from even pre 1923 I cant think of any specific but there was huge classes that just dissapeared completely.

Diesel wise i would of liked one fo the tinsley shunters (class 13?) to have been saved.

And some of the DMU's like the class 124 i would of liked to have seen also.

thats all the springs to mind at moment

A 303 would've been nice.

There is a preserved 303 set, at the Boness and Kinneil Railway.

Yep, they were designated class 13: It wouldn't be hard to replicate them, all that would have to be done would be to semi-permanently couple two class 08s and install multiple working between the two.

There have been so many long gone loco classes that missed out on preservation, some of the biggest missed opportunities as far as I'm concerned would be:

GWR "Grange" class 2-6-0: I'm not a "copper kettle" kind of guy, more of an LNER man, but it seems a shame that none of these moguls were preserved, given that they are ideally suited to the sort of work there is on preserved railways.

BR Standard "Clan" class 4-6-2: A new example, 72010 "Hengist" is currently being built: http://72010-hengist.org/

Blue Pullman DMU

Class 23 "Baby Deltic": One is currently being created from 37372.

DP2 and "Kestrel".

The granges were 4-6-0s, and there is already a project under way at the Llangollen Railway. http://www.6880.co.uk

Whilst on the subject of locos perfect for use on preserved lines, the Severn Valley Railway are also in the process of constructing a BR standard class 3MT tank. http://www.82045.org.uk

There are also the plans at Didcot (Great Western Society) for a Saint class (Lady of Legend) http://www.didcotrailwaycentre.org.uk/guide/projects.html#2999,
A County class (County of Glamorgan) http://www.gwcountyproject.org.uk/,
& a Steam Railmotor with trailer (nos. 92 & 93) http://www.railmotor93.org/

There is also the Patriot project (for mainline use) http://www.lms-patriot.org.uk/index.html

Wow, I knew about the SVRs' 3MT project, I wasn't aware of all the other builds: There certainly are a lot of them going on aren't there?

Thanks for correcting me on the wheel arrangement, it all gets a bit hazy for me with the smaller GWR tender engines.

I had no idea so many were being built, are any even getting close to completetion?
Nice to see, im glad one of the smaller engines are being built (SVR 3MT) cos tank engines to me have something about them even if they arnt as impressive as the large locomotives

Although it wouldn't be the same thing, I wouldn't mind seeing a Class 317 stripped of all the AC equipment and been fitted for Diesel operation using a engine as fitted to the 172s just to show what might have been.

I'm only up to date on a few of the projects that I mentioned, only really the SVR's 3MT (as that is where I go 'to relax').

But, to the best of my knowledge the only ones that are nearest to completion are the Railmotor & Betton Grange.

A quick search has told me that the Railmotor is to be launced next March, much earlier than I thought (from http://www.railmotor93.org/latestnews/latestnews.html), and work will start in earnest on trailer 92.

Betton Grange is a lot further away than I thought.

For that experience just hop on a Class 150! Underfloor distributed power equipment, and fairly similar to a Class 317 although slightly more basic inside.

If you're thinking of the Class 210 they had a large single engine taking up half of one driving car, like the SR DEMUs but unlike anything still running today, so I imaging that driving car would have been a little noisy with the rest of the train giving the same experience as a Class 317 trailer.

A production run of 210s would have been rather useful for multiple working with 317s on some of the routes operated today - for example you could have run a 210+317 from London to Ely with the 210 going forward to Norwich via Thetford or Peterborough via March, and the 317 continuing to Kings Lynn.

DP2 and "Kestrel".
Perhaps a virtual DP2. the 'Deltic that never was', could be created on Railworks - Re-skin the Deltic model in plain green with different side grilles and give it the sound of a Class 50 - probably near enough!

Ah yes Kestrel. Wasn't it rated at 4000hp which would make it still the most powerful diesel loco to run in the UK even allowing for the new class 70?
I'd still love to see a Drummond 700 "Black Motor" chugging around. They pulled so many country freights around the minor lines of the south and were by all accounts good engines though I doubt there's anyone alive now who could testify to that.

I'd say either D600/601 - they really did slip through preservation's fingers in my opinion, mostly through the misfortune of finding themselves dumped at Woodhams with numerous kettles during a time that few really cared about diesels. I do recall reading that attempts were made to preserve D601 but denied due to it's poor condition - ironic really considering the state of some of the kettles that were surrounding her at the time. It's also very sad to think that D601 actually spent more time rusting away in the scrapyard than it did hauling revenue-earning trains.

They were great looking loco's and it's a pity that the narrow-minded denied us D601 - she'd have looked great on any preserved line.

A few suggestions:

The Bennie Railplane

A Listowel and Ballybunion monoloco

Another A3 that could wear BR green without threats being made to it's owner.

Great Bear

A Leek and Manifold loco

LMS Turbomotive (in original turbine form)

The 0-10-0t

GT3

An LMS Garratt

The LNER Garratt

Big Bertha

Leader

A blue pullman set

A Glyn Valley tram engine

I'm assuming it's because sad people who don't want to see Flying Scotsman (the only surviving A3) in anything that's not LNER Apple Green decided to "make sure" it doesn't happen. Personally, I'd like to see Scotsman in her BR Green and those numpties who threaten otherwise locked away in a mental hospital.

Presumably they're very old if they can remember it in this livery IRL. They'll not be around for much longer.

I'd like to add one of the Gresley P2 2-8-2s. Darn one of those on the main line would have been phenomenal: Massively impressive locos. Also the Gresley W1 "Hush-hush" 4-6-4.

Vulcan has come up with some good ones there: I'll throw my vote behind GT3, Leader, "Big Bertha" and an LMS Garratt.

An LMS Garratt

The LNER Garratt

Big Bertha

. . . .

A blue pullman set
. . . .
I agree with these, I'd be fascinated to watch a Garratt at work, and often wonder if the Blue Pullmans could have been updated over time to become as popular as the HSTs that they resemble so much.

Big Bertha is still at work on the ECML - working on-board catering for EC.

Some other suggestions:

Crosti boilered 9F

A real Baby Deltic (not a cut and shut 37)

Hush Hush (Although this has already been said, how could I forget this before?)

One of the GWR's pannier crane tanks

One of the SR's Co-Co electrics http://www.bulleidlocos.org.uk/_oth/coCoElectric.aspx

The LMS 'twins' 10000 and 10001

The Fell diesel mechanical

a class 13

A Bournmouth Belle Pullman EMU set

One of the GWR locos that was streamlined (to show the GWR didn't always have the best ideas!)

Bullied's Irish Peat burning version of Leader

DP2

And about Flying Scotsman, when Pete Waterman owned it he repainted it BR green, and got hate mail for doing so from some of the loco's fans.

when I come to power and buy the NRM, I'll repaint it into Brunswick Green with the deflectors. I'll also buy a series of doors.

I thought most of the fuss about Scotsman wasn't so much from people that didn't like it in BR Green, but rather from people who felt that if it was to be in apple green, it should be 'historically correct' - that is to say, single chimneyed and without the German-style smoke deflectors.

I was under the impression most enthusiasts wanted to see it in BR green, since they are more likely to have remembered the locomotive in this livery - the 'hate mail' (not death threats, admittedly!) mentioned could be seen in the letters pages of the railway magazines at the time the NRM bought Scotsman, with irate enthusiasts berating the NRM for retaining the historically inaccurate livery.

Ah, SprinterGuy, I totally agree. Call me controversial but I would love to see one in original (as in Cock / Earl) form; but wearing Prussian Blue, as per Thompson's A1/1.

Ok, I know, that's what PhotoShop is for...

I wholeheartedly agree. Oh if only "Cock O The North" or "Earl Marischal" had made it through to preservation...

I once asked Dai Woodham about the diesels that they bought. He told me that they were purchased in the hope that they could be turned-round. In other words that they could be sold on for preservation. He said that in the end no-one wanted them, and I think he advised that the [MAN?] engines were taken out and sold on...at least one ending up in a German fishing vessel! The same thing happened with the C2X tender that Woodhams purchased, but at least that was eventually acquired and used behind the replica The Queen at Windsor after surgery.
