Neither Elgin nor Brechin is a city though...

The only Scottish cities are Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness.

Yes, it was a tongue in cheek comment.

St Andrews has claims on city status though

Lastly, discussing Scotland, AIUI Peterhead have the dubious honour of being football league team furthest from a train station (ie SPL, SFL, EPL...).

Indeed it is, but I'll think you'll find it's furthest from a railway station ;)

Bury has a population of 60,000, that's quite a lot!

But is part of the same continuous urban area as dozens of NR stations, including one of the biggest stations in the country with 3tph to London! Historically, traditionally and culturally, Bury is a distinctive town but is now firmly connected within the GM conurbation. There is no gap in urbanisation between Bury and the city centre.

No. Dudley doesn't have a station, though it has stations within its borough at Stourbridge, Lye and Coseley.

Dudley Port is an area of Tipton which is in Sandwell borough, as is Sandwell & Dudley which should really be called Oldbury as it used to be. Just because it gets 1tph to London doesn't warrant the fancy name that implies it serves places it doesn't really.

apparently it was given the name 'sandwell and dudley' when rebuilt in 1984 to reflect that it served both metropolitan boroughs, not because it serves dudley

It didn't use to before 2009; until recently the answer to the question "What's the largest town without a rail station?" was Corby (and before that Mansfield). It's Gosport now, as you've pointed out.

Ah, I thought you meant at present.

But it didn't until fairly recently. Corby and Mansfield were regularly quoted as big towns without rail stations.

True, it beggars belief that large towns don't have railway stations but then absolutely remotely isolated places such as in the Highlands of Scotland have railway services!

Hunstanton does have a connecting bus link to King's Lynn though. Places such as Chathill and Widdrington, whilst having a railway station, hardly get much of a service! (Nearest well-served station for them is Alnmouth)

Ashington and Blyth are both a decent size (and still have the tracks!)

It is an awful long way though - and the continuous urbanisation doesn't help at all since it slows things down.

But it doesn't. There's not even a direct bus to Dudley from SAD anymore. You'd be better off getting a 74 bus from Dudley Port.

It also implies it's the station of the whole of Sandwell when pretty much anywhere other than Oldbury there's probably a closer station or Metro stop.

Shameful behaviour by BR at the time really, which sank to lower depths with the closure of Dudley FLT and finally the whole of the route from Round Oak to Walsall and Bescot....

There would be a good service between Walsall and Stourbridge now if that line had not been closed in 1993. 'Mothballed" was the official term but in reality the route is stripped.

The site of the Freightliner Terminal is ideal for a new station for Dudley, it was the location of the old station before beeching the idiot closed it.

Sadly there is no sign of the Dudley line reopening. We keep hearing waffle about it being used for metro line so-and-so but nothing ever happens.

Hugh Town is nearly 40 miles from the nearest railway station.

Renfrew in Scotland perhaps? Can't think of a station in there. You could however get off at Kilpatrick and walk over the Erskine Bridge, which would be a hell of a walk.

What about Immingham, passenger line from Cleethorpes to Doncaster goes though all the villages but misses Immingham out even though the railway goes to the docks.

Only 2 miles or so from Hillington West, but the walk over the Erskine Bridge would be much better!
