After my son graduated from university, he didn't need a railcard for a while; so it lapsed some time ago. Fast forward to now and he's 25 (DOB in February 1999), and wants to get a railcard again. So he, and then I, looked at the www.railcard.co.uk website today and discovered what appears to be an unfair gap.
If you go to the 16-25 page and then click on 'eligibility', the headline says: "If you are between 16-25". Well he is, he's 25. Yet if I start the application process, the DOB box will reject any date that's earlier than 20 May 2000. So in other words you must be aged between 16 and 24 to apply.
Okay that didn't work, let's have a look at the 26-30 railcard page. Now, that one won't accept any DOB later than 2 June 1998 (presumably you can buy a couple of weeks ahead of validity, as I did recently getting my first senior railcard.
This leads to the quite bizarre situation whereby you can buy a 'young person' type of railcard at any time between the ages of 16 and 29; EXCEPT for a year's window when the person is 25, when they can't buy anything at all. That seems bizarre and unfair. Has anyone else come across this, and if so were you able to resolve it?
