Right so admittedly it has been a couple of years since I have used a train here on the Hull branch. This evening I popped down to Ferriby station for a couple of hours just to see what's going on now.

Must say I was pretty surprised that all Northern's workings were all 158s and all FTPE's workings were 170s.

Last time I caught a train there Northern were using 156s and below, I think. And FTPE were using 185s exclusively - what's happened to that?

Also what range of 180s to FHT operate?

HT operate 180109-111/113.

The 170s operate most services on the Hull branch due to weight based speed restrictions around Selby. 185s still operate some peak time services however. 158s run most services because they are quite long journeys most run Sheffield-Bridlington/Scarborough which would be quite a long run on a 156.

When did the change happen between 185s / 170s?

It was only last year, I think, when for a few months I had to catch the 17:16 service out of hull to Sheffield (although I didn't go that far) and it was invariably a pacer...

It would have been around the end 2006 start of 2007 as TPE received their 170s from SWT at that time.

Well the odd pacer does turn up in Hull from time to time but predominantly it's 158 country and as far as I know it has been like that for the last few years. You will defiantly see pacers and other sprinter types at Hull during the summer as Northern try to strengthen the existing services along the Yorkshire Coast by adding extra vehicles to the service to cater for the extra summer demand.

If there is a problem at Neville Hill with a 158 it is not uncommon for a 142/4 to work a York - Hull train. Saw a 144 working it last month.

I've never really thought of Hull as being on a branch before.

I think its a secondary route. In my opinion, a branch is like what we have at Stourbridge Town or Matlock.
