8 months into my training and im out with my DI now
the group a month behind us had 9 in it and there was only 1 DI available so names went in a hat for him which leaves the other 8 just waiting and front ending until other DI's are available which could be anything from a month to a few months,
i have been told more assessors are starting in january so that will make 5 but of course you have to do a minimum of 250 hours driving and atleast 50 must be night driving but it seems the norm is about 300 to 350 hours and this only counted when your bum is in the seat so you could be working 35 - 38 hours a week but only getting 25 hours driving.
i know this might seem a negative post but it isn't im just pointing out that the courses will most probably not start until march so they can get the backlog under control and trainee's can be put with DI's straight away,
but good luck too all it's the best job you will ever have.

350 hrs, wow that's a huge amount. If you are getting 25 hrs wheels turning in a week then your diagrams on GTR must have a hell of a lot of driving in them as that's an average of 5 hrs per day wheels turning.

The more you drive eventually you would end up just driving there shift and then the hours will rack up after that

What I'm referring to is that when you take into account signing on time, walking times, changing end times, PNB, etc etc all of which are not wheels turning then if you are getting an average of 5 hrs a day wheels turning then GTR diagrams must have a lot of driving in them. At my TOC you only average around 4 hrs per day.

5 hours is nothing really. On a 9h30 turn you could be driving a fair bit more. Some of them are a doss but a lot of them are quite intense. For example yesterday started driving around 1440 and didn't get a break until 1920 and that was only with one change of ends. Then another 3 hours after pnb.
You will be tired by the end of the week lol

Failed as in binned, sacked and sent on their way?

You make it sound like a surprise.
If you don't put in the effort you'll be gone.
You'll get one retest and thats it. They can't spend infinite amounts of money on people who can't get through.

Put in the effort and you will pass, however our trainer has recently failed 4 students on the TL side for slacking off.

I've heard of people getting all the way through to their pre pass out simulator assessment, failing that twice and being binned off. They are now on the platform.

Yeah we have diagrams that are 9 hrs + with 6 hrs + of driving on them but you average out at around 4 hrs per day. Sounds like you have a lot more longer diagrams on GTR.

Hi,

Just visited kings cross just to show you around the depot.

They said 2016 will be busy year with trainee courses so that should be good news everyone in the pool.

How hard are these tests? Is it a case of you revise hard you can pass? or is there more to it like for example the 2 hand co ordination test at the assessment stage which i found a bit tough but still passed... Is there any thing which could potentially stump you throughout the training process?

All the information you need is given to you. It will require a fair bit of self learning at home to help revise.
If you don't do this then it's unlikely you'll get through. Think the pass mark on each test is around 80%

Thanks for the info, are the tests mainly written exams based on theory, or is there lots of practical stuff which you are tested on aswell?

I'm at a different Toc but just toward the end of training. Classroom was 95% PowerPoint and learning theory with written assessments on every subject. Pass mark was 91%

We had practical demonstrations of certain things ie fire evacuations, prepping trains but the school really is desk based

Has anyone got a working contact number for HR!? I have tried the ones on an email I received a while back to no avail. I need to update my address and notice period with them. Thanks in advance.

Is anybody confident that we'll hear anything, even just an update, this side of New Year?

Or is the general concensus that it'll be silence til 2016 ?

Well I was hoping to hear something this week

Seems unlikely now

In theory they would need to be letting people know start dates for January this week or next if there were indeed January courses to give the required 4-5 week notice

6 weeks notice from today takes us too approx last week of January

If they dont get back to us by early next year then would be looking start dates of mid february at the earliest

My friend that has gone through the process has just passed out completely for Peterborough so his di has just come free so maybe there will be a class coming up for Peterborough soon he was saying some of the other lot in his group are waiting to take their last assessment

That DI could potentially move to another depot for his next batch, doesnt necessarily have to be another crowd in Peterborough up next
