Can't see the adjacent running line being closed (isn't it still used to access the various Trafford Park sidings?), but the MUFC station/halt is, to all intents and purposes, no longer in use, so could almost certainly be removed as no longer required.

The sidings appear to be connected to the main two lines, so it doesn’t appear that closing that line would affect their operation.
But is that much space enough for an upgraded stand?
Old Trafford is a crumbling mess, it’s been suggested rather than an upgrade a complete replacement is required, possibly elsewhere on the site. In which case it can be built without impinging on the railway. If anything, it might be an opportunity to look at a decently sized station rather than the halt.

If they did build a new stadium it'd likely be on an entirely new site with the Old Trafford site sold for high density residential development...which might justify a station! Would be better on the main running lines though.

Freights departing from Trafford Park use the line through MUFC platform. It would be a waste of money to demolish the platform if it is not in a dangerous condition.

If it was just the Old Trafford South Stand that was extensively rebuilt, presumably this could be achieved with some sort of cantilever arrangement that then partly overhangs, high up, the main Manchester - Warrington/Liverpool railway line.

Agree with others that the bi-directional running line immediately adjacent the football ground station platform (where non-passenger trains are sometimes held awaiting signal clearance) could be removed if suitable alternative signalling could be installed for freights coming out of the Trafford Park sidings.

Wasn't the halt closed due to safety concerns with the crowds?

On that basis just wait a few years, the crowds will have shrunk to a level that will be perfectly safe!
