The current status of Class 442 carriages.

Does anyone how many 442 carriages still exist and which ones they are and where they are stored?

The latest thread i could find was this from two years ago:

Does anyone know the current status of the coaches in blue? Coaches in red are scrapped, green survive in some way (see note) and blue are unknown

But i presume many more of them have been scrapped now.

What use is a single 442 DTS on its own?
It's a good static exhibit, but there are plans to get it moving again, so stay tuned!

What work has been done so far?
- Buckeye coupler fitted and tested so 77382 can be coupled with Mk3 stock.
- Wiring tested and identified so a jumper can be made up.
- Interior lighting tested with a majority of it working.
- Single sided Passenger Information System displays tested working.
- Front facing cab windscreen mounted PIS display tested working.
- PIS announcements tested working - in multiple languages! (Former Gatwick Express system)
- Doors tested working using shore air supply connected to main reservoir.
- Vigilance system tested working.

What work is planned?
- General restoration inside and out.
- Continuation of the ongoing work on the electrical system.
- Further work to enable it to work with other units... details TBC!

There were various coaches mainly of U.442407 & U.442412 parked in Eastleigh Works alongwith DTF of U.442401.

They werent visable to take photos of unfortunately but I believe that Works tours will be taking place again soon on a Saturday
morning meeting outside the works entrance at 0945. There is a charge to go round which goes to a local charity.

There are 12 x WES coaches still at Eastleigh Works: 77382 71822 71846 71824 71848 77388 71829 71853 77393 77417 71841 and 71865: All of these are ex Gatwick Express, un-modernised cars. Even on organised visits some of these are not accessable because about four stored right down the back by the test house are on dodgy track and are leaning over almost touching vehicles on the next track making it unsafe. Two modernised vehicles that were at Wolverton, 62954 and 77400 were sent to Sims in June and September respectivly 2024. I am not aware of any more retained there - but there could possibly be ??

Interesting... the 2025 Combined Volume has eleven listed at Eastleigh and one at Wolverton, but the one at Wolverton is shown as being 62954... so as that one is out of the way, it would seem to be eleven left. 77382 is the one not listed.

Is anything known about why the non-preserved vehicles are still stored at Eastleigh? A post on the earlier thread linked above says that they're owned by Arlington, so presumably they're not accruing storage charges even though they're taking up space. Is there a potential further use for them (unlikely as that seems) or is it simply too awkward or expensive to extract them and send them to the scrappers?

77382 was definitely there when I went on a tour back in September

Is not 77382 the preserved one - clained by the NRM but ownership passed on to Northumbrian Rail ?
The questtion of extracting cars to be sent away for scrap does not arise as there is a scrapie on site at Eastleigh Works, although they do not seem to have done much since disposing of the Southern 313s.
