What is the highest PVR out there. I'm guessing a London one. Outside of London the Rainbow 5 / indigo must be up there?

Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

Would think the 11A/C Birmingham Outer Circle is a contender with journey time over 2 hours, however think the route is shared between 2 depots Acocks Green & Perry Barr.

And this goes along many miles of the South coast. Not sure what's "unfair" about the comparison. I did comment on it being a very high PVR.

Possibly the view that London routes can have artificially high frequencies, and thus higher PVR counts I suppose?!

Thats the route I was referring to earlier - though it was unclear if there's always 7 NBfL on it. It'll be dropping to 56+7 next month, but remaining as the highest PVR in London.

Care to divulge the reasons behind the drop? Enhanced frequencies on other routes? New routes being unveiled?

I think they've decided there's overprovision at peaks. Going from 24bph over most of the route to 20bph. Off-peaks are unchanged.

The buses released will be cascaded to replace older buses on other routes. The only new routes or extensions to routes I know about are still open for consultation here:

In Sheffield both the 52 and 120 have a PVR of around 35 (shared between two operators but with co-ordinated timetable, interavaliable fares etc).

Beyond that I'm struggling to think of many individual routes (rather than a corridor of several numbered services) that has anything that high in these parts.

The 22 in Edinburgh is probably worth a shout - is that every four minutes?

I guess the distinction to make is between a commercial route (where each bus has to be justified) and a tendered route like a London one (where TfL can allocate any number of buses without the same commercial considerations).

Anyone have a PVR figure for Stagecoach's 192 in Manchester? Very high frequency, though relatively short so maybe not the contender it appears at first thought..

The 22 only has 25 branded buses available for it.
Frequency is about every 5 - 7 mins and an average journey time of 42 minutes, so I shouldn't imagine it'll use all 25 allocated buses.

That would most likely be the 100/101/102 which runs from Hastings to Dover under 'The Wave' branding. Once again, all dedicated double-decker buses with appropriate livery. I'm pretty sure the route is hourly out of peak times, but don't quote me on that!

Coastliner 711. It got longer before it got shorter though. In 1997 it ran Dover to Brighton in 5 hours and at 92.5 miles was the longest bus route in the UK to observe all stops throughout.

It was cut back to Dover to Eastbourne in 1999 and then just to Hastings in 2002.

Rebranded as Wave 100-101 (to avoid EU drivers regs) in May 2009 with the route split taking place at Lydd.

At it's height in 1997, the route was shared between Dover, Rye, Hastings, Eastbourne and Seaford depots with a PVR of ten using DP seated Alexander Olympians. Most of the diagrams were 48 hour cycles with lots of cross crewing and passing between depots.

those alexander olympians are still in service today down here.

The best motors Stagecoach ever bought bar none. Great to drive, lovely ride and would happily cruise at 62mph. They still don't even appear that dated.

East Kent have lost a lot of their P,R and S reg 87 seaters in the last year to severe chassis rot though. :(

Actually, its been mainly the P regs that have suffered the chassis rot, an unfortunate legacy of Volvo using thinner gauge steel when they took over production.

The few R/S regs scrapped have generally had cracked chassis.

Sadly the N regs are also now starting to suffer with corrosion and the influx of E400s from Manchester suggests their time may be limited.

Yeah your right, the 1998 batches have generally succumbed to chassis cracks due apparently to steel with imperfections having been used when new with these imperfections subsequently developing into the terminal cracks now plaguing the fleet.

Quite a few of the N regs were treated in the mid noughties and it's a shame they too are now rotting away as they were without doubt the best of the batches having the L10 and no annoying EDC!

Is there anything that link the 2 Coastliner services or would that require changing in Eastbourne or Hastings?

As I have said somewhere before I have done the 700 (then 200) from Littlehampton to Havant to hop off and get the next service to Brighton as bus passes were not yet valid outside of the area they were issued in but could be issued to and from the local authority they were valid in. I say 'valid in' as they were issued then by the district councils, but valid through out the county council area. Anyway this probably works out as being longer than the end to end trip and I remember being board stiff by Worthing.

Another company though Brighton & Hove operate a route Brighton-Eastbourne requiring a change at Brighton & Eastbourne if that's what you're on about?

The through route from Portsmouth to Dover can be done on four buses, with no change required in Lydd between the 100/101 (when I used it the route was still numbered 711). Otherwise though, every route is independent of the others, and the frequency weakens west of Littlehampton and east of Eastbourne.

The places where changes of vehicles are required are Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings. (Not bad for a route as long as Portsmouth to Dover!)

To sort flip it over how many changes would be needed to get from Churburg to Calais by bus? <D

Believe it or not Stagecoach South explored the idea of merging the 700 and 711 at one point aa a through Dover to Southsea route to provide links across Brighton and Hove but settled on extending the 712 to run between Eastbourne and Worthing instead.

Dont forget the 4 hour long 400 from Eastbourne to Canterbury in 1997 too.
