The damage is done, and may possibly take a bit of remedial work before it is undone. I don't see why this is bad news, it shows a big safety commitment to the line and structure and is the only logical solution to the problem.

It is unfortunate, but it is not bad news for the line.

It does raise a question though, with hundreds of large structures such as this that are 150+ years old, how prepared (financially) are Network Rail for a lot of problems like this in the future?

what would people rather happen, NR ignore it and either a freight or passenger train plummets when the viaduct collapses underneath it?

Safety is of course the paramount issue, but if the Cefn can not be repaired soon, the line may loose freight which is improving , the logs is a growing market,but like steel could use other methods, the detours are causing problems with both, and of course we have already lost W/S capacity on the line.

The double tracking just about kept alive,could also suffer as could the loco hauled services proposed for the line by WAG

OK, it may be a 175 of sorts for WAG2, the Minister as promised all Cardiffs on the UP will go via Wrexham. But The Cefn will give a breath of relief to ATW who want to send all the WAGS via Crewe for revenue reasons.

From what I hear loco hauled stuff is OK to go over the line now. It was shut to freight pending inspection but from what I hear is now open to all traffic.

Gobowen confirm the steel train going South , it would be returning to South Wales, presumably empty? Excellent news for the line
