The best heritage railway for steam?

The Statfold Barn Railway near Tamworth is only three times a year and then by invitation only. Earleir in September there was one of these Enthusiasts Days with 13 locos in steam and working trains. Traffic on the line is very busy and the relaxed attitude of the Railway towards visiting enthusiats is a joy to behold. I have added a gallery (the first of two) to show what can be seen.

Arriving to the sight of 13 locos brewing up 'on-shed' took me back to the days when this was a normal sight. Having seen some of these locos working in Indonesia added to the quality of this visit. Can't wait to go again!

I have just spent three days at the Great Central Autumn Gala with a few friends from college. This was absolutely superb, with the most intensive steam service. Interlaced with the passenger trains were a mixed freight and a coal-empties, plus a (working) TPO and light engines plus the occasional 2-car dmu.

As there are five miles of double track, you actually pass trains en-route at speed. The track layouts and semaphore signalling, along with lineside structures and telegraph poles make the ambience on this railway terrific. The last time I was on this line was in 1976 and the difference between then and now is tremendous. Over the three days the operation was very slick, with quick decision making when things did go wrong.

What more could want - late fifties feel, plus a real-ale tent selling some superb beers. We'll be back!

Although you've onlyasked for the best, my number two is the West Somerset, and three Severn Valley.

LouJ...quite superb. thanks for posting those photos. Excellent. I didn't know about that outfit, though I'd seen the odd snap on the Narrow gauge forum...cheers.:D

Yes, a friend of mine has been there a few times, says it is very good.
