Enough to drive anyone around the bend? The 50ft bus stop that swerves half way across the road
-Bus stop swerves so far across the road it nearly crosses central markings
-Workers made the space three times the length of a normal double-decker
-Residents fear street could become an accident black spot if lines are left

Parking on a busy city street can be tricky at the best of times, let alone if you are driving a bus.

But council workmen have not made the job any easier in Coventry.

Here they have painted this 50ft bendy dotted line which swerves over the road so much it nearly crosses the central markings.

I agree that is is way too long but the claim that it almost crosses the centre line of the road is a bit of an exaggeration. It comes out no further than any other bus stop.
Much ado about nothing if you ask me, if any driver decided to follow the yellow line then they shouldn't have a driving licence.

I presume the 'excessive' length is to leave enough room for a bus to actually access the bus stop, safely, without having to cross to the wrong side of the road, on/near a bend, to avoid parked cars (although I do notice double yellows). Buses can't move sideways, no matter what many motorists and councils seem to think. I suppose moving the whole stop a few yards to a better location never occurred to anyone though. It's no wider than a normal stop though.

Spoke to a friend who works in Coventry Council. Their description of it was someone not reading the works order right. They went on to describe it as a farce!

Some of the road markings I've seen recently really make me wonder if the people who plan these things have ever driven a road vehicle. For example, a road near me had been made into 3 lanes on the approach to a junction with a minor road, with a right turn arrow in the middle lane. But the 'middle' lane is so short the only car you'd fit into it would be a Smart. Anything longer and the back of it is still in the left hand lane. If these muppets got out from behind their desks once in a while and tried driving on the road 'systems' they're devised, I think they might learn a few things about reality.

Appears as though putting a huge bus stop in was a way to avoid putting in extra double yellow lines/clearway marks.

It obviously doesn't need to be that long and the main problem isn't the proximity to the centre but more the way it moves closer to it.

Any driver that did follow the yellow line or was going fast enough on that road to have a major accident basically isn't a driver, but it is a bit confusing if you're new to the road.

You should still drive through the bus stop box unless there is a bus in the way, in which case you give way to oncoming traffic and then go round the bus. I dont see what can possibly cause confusion.

All this stop needed was for the bus stop markings to continue in a straight line from the stop itself to the point on the curve where it intersects the kerb. No need for any concern, no need to block off the bit to the bit to the side, and no need for another non-story from the DM.

Hard? I think not.
