That Massive Wall at Carlisle?

Has that enormous great wall opposite platform 1 at Carlisle always been just a wall, or is it part of a building that was dismantled many years ago?

I've always assumed it was a part of a building (warehouse possibly?) but I don't know for certain.

NLS old maps suggest a much greater coverage of the overall roof, hope this side by side view works:

Indeed. The roof was greatly reduced in the '50s, one side removed and the remaining one shortened at both ends.

There are many good photographs in An Illustrated History of Carlisle's Railways by WAC Smith and Paul Anderson capturing among other things the massive and impressive gothic endscreens that went.

According to "Rail Centres - Carlisle" by Peter W Robinson (Ian Allan, 1986) the overall roof had become dangerous due to lack of maintenance over the war years and afterwards. In 1956/57 the roof was much reduced in size and the original end screens replaced.

The station was known as Citadel but just about managed to avoid flattening the castle - unlike its counterpart at Berwick.

Appears that the free-standing wall at Carlisle station has been Grade II listed since April 1994. See link below..
